I stand by my inclusion of Indiana as a basketball school over picking Illinois. Now this of course was just my opinion but with the talent in this state they sure run to other schools instead of to Illinois.

Let me start with NCAA championships....since everyone in the end is measured by titles won...

Illinois 0 championships for 28 apperances versus
Indiana 5 for 35 apperances

Not to mention 5 titles in 7 final four apperances trumps Illinois 0 for 5 final four apperances. For Illinois that is just not good.

Do I need mention that the undefeated 1976 Indiana team is one of the best All Time vs Illinois that has no comparison. 76 team last team to go undefeated in NCAA competition.

Why didnt Isiah go to Illinois?

5 all time concencious All Americans for Illinois vs 42 for Indiana screams basketball school for the Hooisers.

As far as recent goes both have won 5 Big Ten titles since 1985

And finally Michael Jordan's son quit on illinois team.

If your best athletic schools are measured by NCAA titles heres your order as of 2010;

1.Michigan-42
2.PennSt-41
3.Oh St.-28
4.Iowa-26
5.Indiana-23
6.Minn- 21
7.U of I and Mich St. -20
8.Wisconsin-18
9.NW-5
10.Purdue-3

U of Chicago-2(no longer part of Big Ten)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but Michigan State has more football AND more basketball national championships than Penn State and Wisconsin. They have more national championships in basketball than Michigan. They have one less national championship in football than Ohio State, but one more basketball national championship. So if you really wanna split hairs, Michigan State should be top 3 (considering michigan has 11 football championships).

Since when is 1985 recent? I guess the Bears are fresh off of that Super Bowl victory

If you're gonna use that logic (number of NCAA titles) then as I said before, you might as well put City College of New York, San Francisco University and Oklahoma State ahead of Illinois as basketball programs... but no one that follows college basketball would buy it.

You are correct that Indiana has won more titles than Illinois, but the last one was 24 years ago.

Indiana having an incredible team in 1976 does not keep Illinois off of any college basketball fan's list of "basketball schools."

Saving the best for last:
You are also correct that Indiana and Illinois have both won 5 Big Ten titles since 1985. But what you neglected to mention is that Illinois has won 5 since 1998 while Indiana has won a grand total of 1 in that same time frame when they shared the title with Illinois/Wisconsin/Ohio State

Indiana has a rich history of basketball. But its just that... history.
I guess if Illinois keeps finishing ahead of and producing better basketball teams than Indiana for the next 20 years (like they have been doing for the last 20 years) but come up short of winning it all, they will never be considered the basketball school Indiana is

Easy there...at least Indiana has the history. Illinois has...2005. And thats about it. Illinois may finish higher than Indiana but they arnt exactly lighting the big10 on fire the last few years. Id take michigan state, purdue, and ohio state over the illini any day. And thats not because I'm biased, its because they are all better than illinois lately (and MSU has been better than illinois pretty much forever)

I don't think illinois being a basketball school has any affect on wrestling recruiting though! They need to pull in the top recruits in the state of illinois in both wrestling and basketball!....and football too!
