The ihsa does not pair the regionals sectionals based on rankings. Boo Hoo! Get over it!

Yea, we should all get over watching the better teams get screwed while sub-par teams get a break and a chance to make an undesreved placing. Great lesson for life as well.

If you did pairings based on seeds, you would have teams traveling all over the state, passing up other regional/sectionals along the way. And I know I will hear that we have teams from Chicago going to St. Louis. But please, tell me what you are supposed to do when you have approximately 16 3A schools in central/southern illinois?

I am beginning to miss the old 2-class system more and more. But if the 3-class system is here to stay, a good way to get a more even balance of the top-tier teams & individuals would be to go to EIGHT sectionals and only qualify the top TWO wrestlers from each sectional meet (like they used to do in the really old days of Illinois wrestling). This would mean 16 wrestlers per bracket for the state tournament in each class --- but it would allow the state to be sectioned off much better for regionals and sectionals. This propbably would work best for the 2A & 3A classes. The 1A class works pretty good as is.

So what they travel all over the state for football. But first the team stuff needs to be seperated from the individual regionals then Team wrestling points should/could be compiled like football points are compiled and it should/could be done in January.

One small solution

This will not fix everything but it would help. It would keep geographic balance but get the two best teams in each sectional down state.

Let the IHSA assign the 40 (or so) teams to the sectional. Then seed the top 16 teams in each sectional (similar to basketball).

Regional A would have the 1, 8, 9, and 16 seeded teams
Regional B would have the 2, 7, 10, and 15 seeded teams
Regional C would have the 3, 6, 11, and 14 seeded teams
Regional D would have the 4, 5, 12, and 13 seeded teams

The other 24 teams would be placed in each regional by geography.

This would separate the top teams in the regional and give some balance to the regionals. This would eliminate one regional being way tougher than the other 3 in a sectional (like the Leyden sectional currently is)

For dual meet purposes The winner of A would wrestle the winner of D
The winner of B would wrestle the winner of C

This would allow for the best chance to have the two best teams in each sectional at the state tournament.

Let me know what you think of this idea.

Why not

make the conferences the 1st qualifier, advance the top four 5th is an alternate (hold on Ill get back top him). Then place 4 conferecnes in 1 regional. 16 man brackets top 3 go to state 4th is the alternate. The atlernate only come into play if they have 1) an opening at their weight, and 2) it is a blind draw foro each weight class to see which conference gets the spot. I thinkl this might make the gerrymandering a little easier for regionals and would alow for tougher regionals. Just my .02

Oh and while I'm on my soapbox, can we seed the top eight please. Watching coaches sit on kids to "hope" for a lucky draw kills me. I have seen too manyt timie the last two years a kid with a decent record ( but not good enough for a top four seed) get screwed as a kid with a sub .500 record draw 4-7. I realize that 4 and 5 feed into the #1 but thats at the semis. I just laugh when the meet manager for my conference and regionals asks okay who wants the 2 seed and no one raises their hand. Pre seed the tourney on record 1-8 then when the coaches get together you flesh out head to head and common opponents should take no longer than an hour to do a 16 team tourney. IMHO
