Wrestling attendance
It seems to me that this season in particular attendance at college wrestling events is down from the past 5-7 years. How do you see it?

From what I can gather attendance is up on the east coast (at least at some schools, such as Cornell, Penn State, Rutgers, & Virginia Tech). Lehigh seems to always get strong attendance. Ten days ago the Wisconsin at Minnesota dual was a sell-out (5500) at the Sports Pavilion [it couldn't be held next door at Williams Arena because of girls basketball--of course I don't understand why one could be held at say noon and the other at 3:00, or something like that.]. From what I can gather Mizzou has had disappointing attendance this year. I think the Askrens (and last year Ellis) very much helped to attract fans. This year they are without a superstar. In general, one of the best ways to increase attendance is for the program to ASK fans to show up, and then THANK them afterward for their support. |

Interesting thread
Quote:
1.Iowa is #1 with average crowd over 7,500- no surprise, but interestingly Iowa St. is NOT their biggest draw as a competitor for audience, its OK St. 2.Iowa St. is #2 with an average 4,300 ,pretty good, I think they do this by not only being a top 20 team each year but I think they consistently have one of the hardest schedules and that helps attendance because people like to see the good teams. By comparison Iowa has a much weaker schedule but if they had Iowa St's schedule they might average 11,ooo? 5. Ohio St was #5 with 2,700 avg. attendance. GL probably will be happy to hear that! 6. OK St. -I thought they would be #2 or #3 but they only get 2,500 13. Illinois- they get 1,100. I was actually surprised it is this high. The last couple times I saw a meet I would be surprised if they had 400 people ![]() My biggest disappointment was that Northwestern didnt make the top 20 list? I really do believe they are going to turn that around this year.

Too bad about Northwestern, they do seem to be trying and are making the effort. Both during the dual and with communicating to the community. |

We've been to Northwestern twice this season. (vs. Illinios and Iowa) and it was pretty full. I think there was more there for the Iowa dual but you also had GBN there, Montini was in the building, Matea Valley, I saw some Marmion, and another school that escapes me right now. I think it was great that the high school guys came out ( I assume GBN was there for Ramos) and it would be nice to see more schools attend but it clashes with IHSA schedules for most. I think where they can make a big splash is to make deals available to IKWF teams and reach out to them. The family night that Northwestern did was awesome with my son getting to meet and get autographs from the whole team. They talked to him about his season and the pins on his hat and gave high fives. I think he really enjoyed his talk with Blanton (a few Illini guys hung around the gym) as they talked about tournaments they both went to. But having little guys out there meeting and talking to college guys is a huge deal. Northwestern could really make out with the number of clubs in the area. I'm not sure how the club scene is around Champaign. But thats where I would start. |

attendence
I'm pretty sure it was off thewrestlingtalk.com.
If you google "Top 20 College Wrestling Attendance" there are a couple sites that pop up right away . The report I was looking at was as of the end of 2009 season and gave average attendence and best rival school attendence. I don't think they compile until the complete end of a season in April or May. So its not going to be for a current year. IDK about this year attendance. Maybe some East schools are up or some Midwest down as Conquistadors suspected? My guess is that Cornel and Penn St. and Boise have jumped up in attendence and some others have dipped. Hopefully Northwestern makes top 20 for this year. Some schools post their attendence on their own website. |
