Anyone see their match for 3rd/4th? I saw Ramos won but was it a good match, how did they each score? Any help would be great---thanks!

I Saw it
Ramos relly dominated. I think he took Futrell down 3 times. Futrell really seemed to struggle to come up with any offense. Never really had a good shot. I was shocked. Ramos played rough. Rode Futrell really hard. i think the riding time was over 2 minutes.
Do you think it is the difference in partners/rooms? |

From University of Illinois' website:
"No. 3 seed Tony Ramos (Iowa) got a leg against No. 4 Futrell 30 seconds into the third-place match at 133, lifted it and hit a takedown, but Futrell escaped in 14 seconds to cut the margin to 2-1. Ramos hit another sweep single, lifted the leg and dropped Futrell again to go up 4-1. Ramos rode him out and Futrell started down in the second. The Illini sophomore escaped after a long ride by Ramos and the Hawkeye took a 4-2 lead to the third. Ramos started down in the third and got out in 10 seconds, leaving his riding time at 2:01. Neither man could land a shot in the third and Ramos took the 6-2 win to place third, giving Futrell fourth place" |

This match was very much the opposite of what took place in their last meeting at Midlands. Ramos controlled the pace and direction of that match from the first whistle to the last whistle.
A few things I've noticed. Since Midlands, Tony Ramos has been on an almost vertical trajectory in terms of his wrestling. His overtime match vs. Graff surprised me. The kid is becoming what all the Illinois homers expected him to be. BJ Futrell has one heck of a time getting up off the bottom and I'm not basing it on this match alone. His inability to score consistently when down on the mat is hurting him. Ramos seemed to get in on Futrell almost at will while BJ had a really hard time getting past Tony's defense. Personally, I knew the match wasn't going to be identical to the one in December, but I didn't expect that Ramos would shut down Futrell the way he did, but Ramos seemed to just cruise through that entire match.

Ramos = Stud. Considering he wasn't even a starter at the beginning of the season to see where he is now is pretty impressive. I think he has a legitimate shot at standing towards the top of the podium in a couple of weeks - if not the very top. There has also been talk of him switching weights with McDonough next year, not sure how accurate that talk is, but I'm guessing he'd be pretty dominate at that weight.

not sure about him making 125 ever again, it looks like he has filled in to 133 nicely. which has probably helped his wrestling and training because he hasnt had to worry about his weight that much.

I'm not one to speak about anonymous sources typically, but as recently as the end of January 2 people very close to Tony reiterated to me that the plan as of right now is for Tony to go 125 next year. Per this discussion, it will be a little difficult to make the weight, but he is not really cutting at all this year, so the thought is he will be able to safely make the weight.

I was told (from a teammate) that cutting to 125 lb. wasn't the problem, it was beating McDonohough for the spot. I could see Tony at 125 lbs otherwise.
