Lots of hs kids reffing hs matches of their rivals and teammates, lots of good throws, several controversies and interesting rules applications. Townsell and Henry with some huge throws. Some heart breaking losses. Definitely an interesting event that was ran well.

With FILA, Northern Plains (Juniors), and FS/GR State completed; I expect to see a lot of IL wrestlers at the Central Regional in Indiana this weekend. After that Regionals in Georgia, Kansas, and Pennsylvania add a lot of travel time.

Cadet Duals (Daytona Beach, FL) start June 14th and Junior Duals (Oklahoma City, OK) start June 23rd. Fargo starts July 15th.

I wonder if they could get the Greco tourney done in 1 day? Not sure what the total numbers was for the weekend, but I know they only wrestled about 3 hours on Sunday...I also was told it was ran very well...

I wonder if we can do a better job of teaching how much Greco can have a positive influance on both Freestyle and Folkstyle, so that we have to wrestle two full days and thinlk about starting Friday evening? When I saw Brice Brill using a 2 on 1/ Russian at the Ironman there's always hope!

I agree. I have actually seen a lot of Greco used in Folkstyle the past few years...It is catching on with many and is evolving folkstyle a bit...

A lot of good wrestling at Greco state....but

I'd like to see Greco state become an elite state tournament again. This is not a knock on the wrestlers or the tournament, but many of the states top greco talent was not at the state tournament this year. I understand that as a state we want the seeding points and encourage our wrestlers to go to the regionals to qualify, but to win Greco state you should have to beat the best greco wrestlers in the state. Maybe I just don't know the next group of greco wrestlers coming up, but I remember going to greco state and seeing Stenberg vs. Hecox and Castellano vs. Holms...there where great match ups everytime you turned around.

I might be way off base, but I'd like to see the tournament moved up eariler in the month and get all the top state greco wrestlers in the tournament and then send groups of kids out to the regionals to get the seeding points.

I am new to the wrestling world so when my freshman son told me he was going to Greco state I was shocked. He had learned two Greco moves, never wrestled Greco style before but was encouraged to start at this tournament. It appeared that he was in the higher bracket, lost two, one bye and one win. Well run but maybe at a certain tournament level there could be some basic requirements. That said he loves Greco, wants to go to Indiana this weekend and northern plaines. Is this crazy?

My son, Nicholas, had never wrestled Greco before the spring of his sophomore year (contrary to popular belief). That spring he wrestled only Greco (except for freestyle state). His junior year it took him about one third to half the season to figure out how to adapt what he learned in Greco to folkstyle; but when he did, it took his folkstyle to a whole new level. He took off, and placed second at IHSA state. He kind of froze in the finals, after beating the state champ at the sectional the week before. This past season he was taken down once all year until the state semi-finals. He wrestled one bad match (the semis) and came back and won convincingly in the consolation semis and 3rd place matches. He never placed in the IKWF. The difference for him was everything he learned in Greco, not freestyle. The last freestyle match he ever wrestled was freestyle state his sophomore year. People who ignore Greco don't understand what it brings to the table, and they mistakingly believe it is all about throws. They equate Greco with lateral drops and headlocks. It isn't.

my sons game got taken to the next level with greco. each year he got better and better and made it to nationals his junior year. now in his senior year this year he took 2nd at greco state and is going to nationals again this year. greco made him as good as he is. in every single match he had this past year he threw some one. the throws he learned really helped set up beautiful take downs and many times put him into a position to go for the pin. with all that hes learned from it he should be able to go deep at greco nationals this year.
