OASWT Wrestling Tour - Summer 2012

Dear Wrestlers, Coaches & Parents,

After a four year absence from traveling, the Ohio All-Star Wrestling Team is once again planning a cross-country wrestling tour, for the summer of 2012, which will mark the team’s 30th Anniversary. Since 1983, more than 600 of the top Ohio, as well as Midwest and East Coast wrestlers, have participated as a member of this team (see partial list below).

Wrestlers interested in applying need to be enrolled in the 5th-9th grade, during the 2011-2012 school year and have an anticipated 2012 summer weight of 60-145. They should also be carrying at least a 2.5 (B-/C+) grade point average. An application can be found at: http://ohiotofc.com/index1.php?intId=7

While the majority of the wrestlers chosen will be from Ohio, applications from non Ohio wrestlers will be considered, as the team has had wrestlers from 18 other states participate as a member of the team (PA, NJ, NY, MI, MD, VA, DE, IN, IL, MA, NH, WV, CA, CO, CT, VT, WY, NC).

The 2012 tour will take place from mid June thru the end of July, with the final itinerary finalized by the end of this year. The tour will begin with a week long high intensity wrestling camp, followed by five or six weeks of additional practices, competitions and sightseeing out west.

Note: Unless the team participates in a tournament, wrestlers will not be required to maintain a certain weight during the tour. Dual meets against teams are set up whereby we send them our team roster (names, ages, approximate weights and accomplishments) and they do their best in matching up against us.

The approximate cost of the tour will be $4000 and fundraising materials will be provided. This fee basically covers all expenses, with the exception of souvenir spending (training camp, airfare, ground transportation, lodging, sightseeing, meal money, etc...).

Besides the wrestling, past team’s have enjoyed visits to: Space Needle, Disneyland, Diamond Head, Hanama Bay, USS Arizona Memorial, Mt. Rainier, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Pikes Peak, US Olympic Training Center, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, St. Louis Arch, San Diego Arch, Broadway Shows (NYC), Custer Battlefield, Blue Man Group (Las Vegas), Cirque de Soliel (Las Vegas), Morman Tabernacle and Temple Grounds, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Tijuana (Mexico), Baseball Games, Vancouver (Canada), Hollywood, Alpine Slides, Water Parks, Magic Mountain, Knott’s Berry Farm, Tv Show Tapings, Improv Shows and much more.

They have also had private talks with several well know individuals, including: Former President Ronald Reagan, William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, John Wooden, Eric Heiden, Peter Vidmar, Rulon Gardner, Rick Barry, Raymond Berry, Don Perkins and several others.

All applications for the 2012 OASWT are due by October 15, 2011 and all selected wrestlers will be notified by October 22. An initial team meeting is planned on the weekend of October 29-30.

If you have any additional questions, you can contact Team Chairman Bart Freidenberg at bdbop@aol.com or at 614-833-5885.

I have received several responses, from parents and coaches,
asking for a bit more information about what a typical schedule for the Ohio All-Stars looks like. So, I thought I would send out the itinerary that was used for our 25th Anniversary Tour. This should give all of you a pretty good
idea of what the typical tour consists of. However, please note that
the 30th Anniversary tour will be a bit shorter, will not include the
Hawaii portion and might begin about a week later (so around mid June).

Again, we are looking to select 18 wrestlers to the team. Wrestlers
will need to be in the 5th-9th grade, during the 2011-2012 school year,
have an estimated 2012 summer weight of 60-145 pounds and carry at
least a B-/C+ grade point average.

I have also included a list of the team members from the 2007 tour, but
have removed their contact info. If any of you wish to talk to any
parents, of past participants, to get their opinions on the tour,
please let me know and I can provide you contact info for them.

Yours in Wrestling,

Bart Freidenberg
