Jon Davis IKWF Kids Open

Maybe all this is already well known since I've been somewhat out of the IKWF loop, but I received this from the Sectional Director regarding the kids open:

There are some changes to the kids open this year
-5 and 6 year olds are back this year
-New Intermediate ELITE division
-***Senior Elite Champions get a spot on the Illinois National Middle School Dual Teams

BTW, I always liked the no coaches format of the Kids Open (atleast for 7+ kids). Kids learn a lot about making their own decisions.

Those are some of the new changes. They are good changes, I still wish they allowed coaching, gave more than 2 matches for the little ones, and it was closer, but glad to see the changes. They should help numbers.

If you kids makes it to the olympics or the ncaa finals, he will have a coach at the age of 20 to 30. But with 500 wreslters and hundreds of fans, you are okay with an 8 year old all by himself? You are an idiot. Remember what it is like to be 8? Why change the rules for one tourney, when for the rest of their lives, they have a coach. Coaches are not just there to coach but to keep them away from Sandusky's and to make sure they are hydrated, warmed up and physically ready to wreslte. Dumbest event in the wolrd is an event that ask young kids to participate in a sport with no guidance. ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THIS IS A MORON. ANYONE.

Angry Kids Open

I just don't understand the IKWF's reasoning for no coaching at this event. Every sport we know and participate in has a coach that is there for his or her athletes. My biggest fear is one of my wrestlers getting hurt and it takes 15-20 minutes to get down on the floor (especially the 10 and unders). Strangers trying to calm them down instead of a coach or parent that they know well comforting them.

The Kids Open could be a showcase tournament that is similar to the State Tournament in Rockford with rotating sites that attract the best wrestlers in Illinois but instead it is a gimick tournament that an OVERWHELMING majority do not care for.

WAKE UP IKWF!

While you make some valid arguements, I find the Sandusky statement simply incorrect. (of course when you say 500 wrestlers you show you have never been to a Kids open) You can walk your wrestler to the bullpen, have thousands of eyes on him in the mat area and be there when he walks off the mat. he is a whol lot safer than the kids running through the halls at any weekend tournament without parents watching them.

And I think you are wrong, the overwhelming majority like this, especially the kids. I will support yur arguemne tabout bantams, but onc ethey have expeience I agree with the first poster.

My oldest son hated the no coaching part, whether it was at kids open or whether it was as the result of a rule put in place by the head coach that said there was no coaching when teammates competed against each other. He always liked having his coach there with him. He still feels that way at age 14.

My youngest son didn't care one way or the other.

Well you've earned your name. I've said a few things on this board and sometimes people have a contrary view, but this is the first time I've been called "an idiot" and "A MORON". My son has been to this event many times and he's done ok inspite of getting many, many hours of coaching from an idiot. LOL Seriously, get a grip.

did ikwf make this change due to lagging participation or the new threat from iway? My guess, both.

it was done last done w/in the last two days since their link on track still shows no 6 & under registration...lolz

FINALLY Sat weigh ins....about time.

Now will midget state follow suit and make the changes they need to make? My bet..nope.

I think the answer is quite simple. Coaches in the corner add a great deal of time to each bout. Think about it. Calls get questioned. Conferences held. Wrestlers have to go shake the other coaches hand. Coaches show kids what they did wrong on the mat after the matches. No last minute pep talks. No consolation given and no joyful exhibitions. All these things take time.

I think when the event was at its peak, the only way you could get all the matches in was to eliminate the coaching. I really like to coach but if everyone is operating under the same rules, I don't mind it for one event. I think you can sit back and better evaluate your wrestler.
