Olympic reflection...
Two things occurred to me today while watching the 2012 Olympic Games on webcast, both involving previous Olympic Games, both taking place in Munich.
First, 76 years ago US Track and Field star Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals, the first American to do so and in the process struck a HUGE blow against racism and the Nazi belief in the "superior Aryan race". Hitler was so upset at one point he walked out of the arena. Second was the tragic kidnapping and murder of 11 Israeli athletes in 1972 by PLO terrorists. I entered the military in 1977 and this event, and several that followed led me to eventually join an elite CT unit. I find it amazing that several Arab countries threatened to boycott the 2012 games if there were any special tributes or memorials involving the 1972 massacre.

It really makes you wonder about how they teach their youth in those countries. The Iranian Leader Mohmoud Ahmadinejad said at a UN conference with many of the top leaders in the world that the Holocaust never happened and was all fabricated by the U.S. I think thats what those countries believe, and if they don't want to recognize the athletes that were brutally killed then maybe they shouldn't be apart of the games at all.

Olympics are an opportunity
These are sporting events. They give an opportunity to set aside differences and find common ground. Largely, this has been the case in the modern Olympic era, and there are untold examples. This is good thing.
The two examples given are in stark contrast. Anyone who attempts to soil the Olympics is dismissed to a particularly dark place in world history. |

Was it just me or was it even sweeter to see Jordan beat the Iranian for gold?

It was sweet for me as I made a point of going and watching it with my grade school coach.

I'm curious, with all the gold medals won, who will make the talk show circuit (Letterman, Leno, etc.). Will Burroughs get on one of the major shows, or will they stick to the regulars like Phelps, May/Walsh, etc.? I would like to see them promote some of the guys that maybe didn't get as much attention during the games, and it seems like Burroughs has a great media-friendly personality.

I love Conan and I've watched him from the beginning since way back when he was on at 12:35am in the mid 90s. That being said, I can't see him doing an interview with a wrestler in which he doesn't make fun of wrestling. Still I'd like to see Varner get on the show. Maybe he can talk Conan into getting up and doing a demonstration, I could see him going for that.
