SIZE and wrestling
I know this is a wrestling forum,BUt do you think there is any correleation between wrestling and size?In other words do you feel wrestling can hinder or close growth plates prematurely?I notice many wrestlers I have seen from freshman to senior year hardly ever gain in HEIGHT.I have also noticed families with 3 boys whereas the wrestler is considerably shorter than the rest of the family.I dont mean to be disrespectful to anyone here, but have you guys noticed this?Do you think wrestling can stunt your height?

The amount of weight cutting that goes on is anything but healthy. Does it stun growth, I don't know? I'm not a nutritionalist. I'd be interested in some facts however.

Also realize that there are many wrestlers that chose wrestling becasue they are too small for baseketball or football, so already there is going to be a manipulation in what you see. Yes alot of wrestlers are short but i dont think it is as much because of wrestling as it is because more short ppl are driven to the sport of wrestling. But if anything at all wrestling affects height by maybe two inches, because i know sets of twins where one is a wrestler and one isn't even identical ones and the wrestler isn't very much shorter. So wrestling isn't why someone is short (5'4) because if at all wrestling stunted their growth by maybe 2 inches. But this is all from my observations and is my oppinoin.

Not My Experience
Obviously I am not speaking for the masses, however wrestling did NOT stunt my growth.
I come from a family where the average male is about 5'8" or 5'9". I was around that height until my junior year in high school (ironically, that is when I started wrestling). From then until ~ my 21st birthday, I grew to my present height (6'). This took place while wrestling in high school & college. |

Wrestling would only stunt your growth if you deprive yourself of nutrients while cutting weight. Now, before you breath a sigh of relief, if you're cutting weight, chances are, you're not getting all your nutrients. Well, unless you're eating a perfectly balanced and healthy diet, which, chances are, you are not. I highly recommend taking a multi-vitamin if you're cutting weight, as this will help you to get all the vitamins and minerals you need.
On the twin note from a previous poster: Your study would only be valid if the twins were identical. Fraternal twins are not genetically identical, whereas identical twins are; hence the name. |
