Former Illinois wrestlers at Jim Fox Open

Today at the Jim Fox Open held at the University of Dubuque. I saw alot of former Illinois HS wrestlers.... Heres how they fared!!!!

125 Ryan Nallen (U of Illinois) DNP

133 Joe Gomez (U of Illinois) 2nd, lost to Billy Murphy (Iowa) 15-3... Murphy was damn tough for a freshman. This kid is 100X better than what he was at the Ironman when I saw him last!

Manzalla placed 3rd, he dropped a 13-7 dec. to Murphy in the QTR's...

149 Chuck Pieritz (University of Dubuque) placed 3rd, losing to Matt Ballweg of Iowa by a dec. Ballweg went on to lose to Troy Tirapelli (U of I) in the finals. Pieritz beat Eric Hanson (Loras) and former TF South wrestler, but INJ DFT. Pieritz had a 6-1 lead at the time of INJ DFT.

157 Clint Arlis (U of I) placed 3rd, he dropped a 9-8 dec. in the semi finals.

165 The toughest weight class of the tournment!
Smith Bergsrud finished 2nd losing to Perry in the finals by fall. Bobby Larson (University of Dubuque) and former DeKalb wrestler finished 4th, losing to Jake Kerr of Iowa by a 5-0 dec. Jake Murphy (Purdue) and former Marist wrestler finished 7th. This weight class was STACKED!

174 Ben Friedl lost to E. Luedtke (Iowa) in the Semi's by fall. He wrestled back to finish 4th dropping a 7-1 dec to University of Illinois teammate Nick Guida.

184 Dergo (University of Illinois) won this weight class. David Gliessner (U of I) finished in 3rd! Dergo looked really tough, and he will do just fine in college wrestling... It didnt look like his knee was bothering him at all.

197 Ben Zulaf (U of I) and former Sterling standout finished 2nd, he lost in the finals to Illinois teammate Patrick Bond.

285 Jon Wise (U of I) finished 2nd losing by dec. to Matt Fields (Iowa). Fields looked very tough. Mike Shaub (U of I) finished 3rd, he lost to Fields early in the tournament.

The Illini didnt bring everyone.... Kennedy and Kotowski didnt make the trip...

There were a lot of good Illinois kids in alot of different teams lineups this last weekend. Jared Christner(Quincy) from millikin at 125 took third, Mario Sullivan(Crete-Monee) placed 7th at 133. Lots of promise, hope all former Illinois wrestlers do well this season.
