MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. -- Wrestling St. Rita's Albert White, the No. 1-rated 152-pounder in the nation and a three-time state champion, is a daunting task. But Lockport's Lucas Roth executed his game plan perfectly and shocked everyone with a 1-0 decision Saturday, making him the outstanding wrestler in the Dvorak Invitational.
''I just wanted to stay low and not let him get my legs,'' said Roth, who lost to White 16-4 at the state tournament last year. ''I had nothing to lose. ... He's Albert White!''
Roth got out in the second period for the only points he needed. He stayed aggressive, and a scramble situation went back and forth with each wrestler averting a takedown. Roth put the legs in for the majority of the third period, and White couldn't move. A sea of teammates swarmed Roth to hug and slap him with congratulations.
Montini, Sandburg, Iowa City West and St. Rita had two champions apiece, but Montini's depth gave it a 225-221 victory over Sandburg in the 30-team tournament.
''We've been second and third a number of times, so it was nice to finally break through,'' Montini coach Mike Bukovsky said. ''It comes down to depth in this tournament, and we had 11 placers.''
At heavyweight, Montini's Garrett Goebel earned a 4-3 decision in triple overtime against Christian Brantley of Mount Carmel. Brantley let Goebel go and got a takedown with 12 seconds left. But Brantley was called for locked hands, and Goebel escaped with two seconds left for the victory.
Mike Benefiel of Montini won at 171. At 103, Mount Carmel's B.J. Futrell showed why he's No. 1 with an 11-3 major against Dixon's Joe Roth. Futrell had to go overtime in the semifinals against Sandburg's Jon Morrison, getting a takedown early in the extra period for a 3-1 victory. Senior Nick Leinfelder (112) of Neuqua Valley scored two points with three seconds left for a 3-2 victory against Fenwick freshman Chris Dardanes.
''I felt his arm, grabbed it and rolled with it,'' Leinfelder said.
Providence's John Starzyk beat Mount Carmel's Zeke Rowan 7-1 in the 130-pound final.
Other area winners were Steve Zimmerman (135) of St. Rita, Jeremy Ellingwood (140) of Plainfield Central, Matt Cusick (145) of Sandburg, Eric Pretto (160) of Sandburg, Jerome Ward (189) of St. Rita and Joe Fagiano (215) of St. Patrick.
