He won a trophy but lost respect.
I joined to post about Coach Birt. Wrestling is different than any other high school sport. There are no bats, racquets, gloves, balls, nets or goalposts. It’s just one on one, man to man, hand to hand and we get to see who the toughest kid is. Strength, quickness and technique have a lot to do with who wins a match. But more often than not it’s toughness that wins. It’s the kid with the biggest heart, the one than never quits that we are most proud of. When Coach Birt stepped out on the mat and pulled his wrestler he went against the heart of wrestling which is toughness. Instead he used weakness to win. The Porta kids have learned that life is not always fair and now they must learn to move on.
A state final is more than a trophy. It’s about respect it’s showing the rest of the state just how good you are. Coach Birt has won a 4th place trophy, but I think he has lost much more, he has lost the respect of most of wrestling community in the State of Illinois. |

I heard a rumor, maybe someone can confirm or deny, that the old Gibson City coach went to the school board and asked for them to replace Birt. Is there any truth to this?? This information came from a Gibson City resident that was sickened by what Birt did. So, the whole town isnt backing them up as their supporters are leading us to believe.

Not true
It is not true that the old coach asked to get rid of Coach Birt. First off, there has not been a Board of Education meeting since State. The last meeting was on Feb. 19th and the March meeting has not happened yet. Besides, I can not imagine Coach Everett asking for Birt's resignation; he picked him for the job.

I believe you that Gene picked him for the job, but I cant beileve he would support winning in this way.

the solution is simple!
Amanda,
what you post is probably true. Ryan Birt is probably a great guy who has not had an easy life. He was probably a great competitor who has shown class. there is a good chance that is all true. but... He made a terrible mistake that is making him look like a scumbag. His decision, influence, and leadership robbed several young men of what they worked so hard for. It also took the emphasis off his own wrestlers. he even sounded like a jerk when interviewed. this, we all know is true. the solution is simple... PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE If Birt would apologize, to all those who was affected by his poor judgement, HE would be forgiven. Most everybody would forgive and forget, quickly. the ball is in his court. stop hiding. If he has already done so, it should be reported and this topic should end.
