Huskies Battle, but Fall at No. 22 North Dakota State

Brit Wilson scores victory at 174

By NIU Athletics

FARGO, N.D. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team suffered a 35-4 setback to No. 22 North Dakota State at the Scheels Center Thursday night.

The Huskies (0-1) got off to a rough start, facing a pair of ranked wrestlers in the first two matches of the night and four overall. North Dakota State (2-0) raced out to a 20-0 lead after winning the first six matches.

Brit Wilson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) stemmed the tide by posting NIU’s lone win on the night. The redshirt freshman scored an impressive, 15-4 maj. dec. over No. 24 Lorenzo De La Riva, at 174. Unfortunately for NIU, those would be the only points the Huskies would score.

“Brit displayed what we preach in the room,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “He set the tone early and kept his foot on the gas.”

While they were losses, Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis./Stratford/Eastern Michigan), Kenny Moore (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) and Caden McWhirter (Prattville, Ala./Prattville) battled in their respective weight classes. Kauffman and McWhirter lost their bouts at 157 and 184, respectively, by a score of 4-3. Moore was edged out, 3-2, at 165.

The Huskies return to action Saturday, Nov. 17 when NIU welcomes Clarion, Harper and Utah Valley State to Victor E. Court for the Huskie Duals. The event begins at 11 a.m. CT.
