Team Illinois dominates at Junior Greco Duals
By Roger Moore
Special to TheMat.com
OKLAHOMA CITY – There was a lot of down-to-the-wire drama at the 2008 Junior Greco Duals inside Abe Lemons Arena on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
Illinois, however, was not part of it.
The 2007 champions turned in a performance for the ages in rolling to the 2008 title. Top-seeded Minnesota was no match, falling 40-22, in a Wednesday morning semifinal. A short break and Illinois ran away from upstart California, 45-18, in the championship match.
“I was almost thinking that my guys might have been over-confident (after beating second-seeded Missouri on Tuesday),” said Illinois coach Mike Powell. “I made it clear that we were coming here as the four seeds. Minnesota had almost double the seed points, so my guys kind of had that chip on their shoulder coming in.
“This is the best group of kids. When you’ve got guys taking two trains and a bus to come to practice you know you have a good group. I was ...

Area wrestlers hold their own against Bulgarians
By Eddie Burns
Special to The Naperville Sun
The future of United States wrestling appears it can hold its own against international competition - at least at the local level.
Team Overtime School of Wrestling in Naperville hosted an international exhibition with the Beroe Wrestling Club, located in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, on Friday night (June 20) at Neuqua Valley High School, and Team Overtime collected victories in 11 of the 17 matches.
"It is everything I thought it would be," said event organizer and Team Overtime coach Sean Bormet. "It was great to watch this event unfold for our kids because everything is new for them."
Bormet organized the exchange with the Bulgarians, who arrived earlier in the week. The dual meet came in the middle of a 10-day training camp between the two wrestling schools. The Bulgarians return home Thursday.
The dual meet format included four Greco-Roman matches and 13 freestyle matches, which are more commonly ...

Dear Hopeful Donor:
The Olympics are the epitome of any sports competition. Individuals train at a different level separate from any other athlete. Training does not involve just conditioning and practice, training becomes a lifestyle. Those athletes sacrifice more than others to achieve their dream of reaching the most prestigious competition of them all. When this happens and the athlete is privileged enough to don our Red, White, and Blue and be able to say, “I represent the United States of America,” those hard days of practice begin to fade away.
Doug Schwab, Osage, IA native and University of Iowa Assistant Wresting coach, is one of the few that will forever be able to proudly say, “I represented the USA at the 2008 Olympics.” Doug earned this honor by winning the 2008 Olympic Trials, but this journey started long ago. As a child Doug grew up dreaming of Olympic Gold and August 20th, 2008 he will have the opportunity to achieve that goal.
The Olympics are held in Beijing, China and more than anything Doug would like the support of his family to see him achieve his lifelong goal. We are asking for donations to make that trip possible for the family of ...

At 17, Chase is future Olympic threat |

Las Vegas, NV - In December of 2005, Jimmy Chase was a freshman wrestling at 112 pounds for Illinois powerhouse Glenbard North High. Splitting time with older sister Caitlyn in the GBN line-up at The Clash, one of the nation’s best high school wrestling events, Jimmy picked up a fall with what he thought was his trademark cradle.
“That’s all I really know,” he said back in 2005.
Well, he’s picked up a few things and he’s also picked up more than his share of opponents.
Flash forward to the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Chase has made a name for himself at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, but cradles are no where to be found.
Chase is wrestling Greco-Roman … and he’s pretty good at it.
