EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 17 Northwestern (8-3, 3-3 Big Ten) battled No. 19 Rutgers in front of a packed crowd for the home finale at historic Patten Gymnasium on Friday night.
No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) put the Wildcats’ on the board early, notching his second ranked win of the season against No. 12 Eleazar DeLuca. The Broomfield, Colorado, native controlled the bout from start-to-finish, notching a 9-3 decision.
No. 17 Johnny Sebastian (174), battling against his Bergen Catholic HS teammate Joe Grello, added another Wildcat win via a 5-2 decision. The victory improved Sebastian’s overall mark to 21-7.
Zack Chakonis (197) tallied his 11th win of the year, an 8-0 major decision over Rutgers’ Willie Scott. It was his third victory by major decision of the campaign.
Conan Jennings (285) increased his season mark to 18-7 with a shutout win in the final bout of the match, defeating Razohnn Gross by a score of 3-0. The contest finished 22-13 in favor of Rutgers.
Northwestern is back at it on Sunday morning for a breakfast dual against No. 7 Iowa at 10 a.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
