  • Morgan,Kennedy,Robbins

Looks like Morgan,Kennedy, and Robbins will all be at the UNI open on Sunday. Who wins? One of these 3 or someone else? Should be a good weekend.

    yeah

They will all be at 133lbs. Personally I think Kennedy has the best chance of the 3 to win this. Robbins has a chance at placing. Morgan would need to put together a good run to place here. Usually this tournament is tough as nails. Hopefully this year is no different.

      Who does Iowa bring?

Don't over look Iowa. Will they bring Slaton, Murphy, Dennis or all three? None of the three? This weight will be stacked this weekend and will be a good one to follow!
Anymore insight? Twist, what are your thoughts?

My thoughts? I hope they all compete like real men, finish injury free and for the freshmen like Kennedy and Morgan I hope that they continue to learn what the nuances of college wrestling is all about. I also hope that they represent Illinois well. 125 and 133 in college will always be loaded but everyone there is qualified to be there or they would not be there. No one can afford to overlook anyone.

And for Blake, I think every college tournament is tough. I have never been to one that's not. So everyone will have to put together a good run because anyone can knock anyone off on the college level. I was at UNI last year and it was no tougher than the UNO Open or the Duals or any other tournament. A lot of good wrestlers might not place. There are a lot of variables and I think at this time of the year, especially for a freshman it is all about mastering your technique and getting ready for Feb. / March, unless you are a redshirt.

side note: I got a phone call saying that Illinois starting lineup will be in Las Vegas and their backups will be at UNI. I would imagine other programs may follow suit.

As COPD said, Illinois is not participating this year. Last year they did indeed have their starters at Las Vegas and sent others to UNI. This year, UNI is the tournament on their schedule. I'm guessing that most/many non-injured will go to UNI.

Mr. Twister, maybe you were in a time warp from last year. Cool!

              Iowa vs Iowa St.

Guys I would be suprised if any of the Iowa or Iowa State backups are wrestling at the UNI Open, since the big dual on Sunday at Carver Hawkeye Arena.... As hyped as the dual is, I am pretty sure eveyone on both teams will most likely be in attendance for the dual...

                  Results

                  Kennedy 5-1 3rd Place

                  His match scores were 12-2, 14-2, 7-0, (L 3-1sv), 3-0, 3-1

Robbins 3-2 DNP (one match from placing)

Morgan 1-1 Did Not Place (injury default)

Some interesting facts about this weight:

All 3 of these wrestlers were knocked out of the championship bracket by Billy Murphy(Iowa redshirt, #1 130 in the country last year) He beat Kennedy 3-1sv, Morgan 10-5 and Robbins 8-4.

Morgan defaulted out of the tournament before his first wrestleback...he was slated to wrestle Dan Manzella. Hopefully he isn't injured.

Brackets are up on UNI website. Gabe Flores took 1st at 125; Billy Murphy at 133; Cassio Pero took 1st at 141; Brent Metcalf at 149. Sorry...that is far as I got.

Morgan got hurt in the match with Manzella. Score was 2-2 when Manzella came from behind and lifted Morgan. Morgan attempted a standing switch on the way down and his knee buckled. It went in two directions at the same time. Ugly to say the least. The injury is somewhere between a knee sprain and a torn ACL. Got to wait for MRI. If it is ACL it is a redshirt year for sure and back on the mat in May. Manzella was first class. He said he felt the knee pop through his body. Now that is wierd. He was really worried about Mario's injury and spoke with Mario TWICE and me once about it. It was in no way his fault or anything. It was just wrestling and sometimes these things happen. When I first saw it I thought he had broke his leg. We will know more on Tuesday.
