  • 2 day regionals

There are still a few conference tournaments to go this weekend and then regional time. 1. Will the extra weigh in effect many weight class decisions? 2. Has the IHSA even tried to figure out just how many weight classes would be in danger of over 5 matches? 3. Why are they so stubborn and do not accept the fact that 11 wrestlers (not 10) makes a bracket in a 1 day tournament vulnerable? 4. Are they more afraid of zero brackets that actually needed a 2 day event or of even just one weight class that has 11 wrestlers? 5. Do they care that student athletes now have to get out of school early one more time? 6. Is there an answer to the issue?

    1. I would guess at least a few. More likely the guys who are average type wrestlers. Not the studs.
    2. Absolutely not.
    3. This is outrageous.
    4. Obviously the latter.
    5. Obviously not.
    6. Possibly. Why not put in a caveat that any bracket with over 10 wrestlers becomes wrestle back from the semi finals? 3 of the top 4 seeds would have to lose for any chance of someone wrestling a 6th match.

Here's a thought. In the event that someone would wrestle their 6th match, don't wrestle the 3rd place match at all and advance both? 3rd place would be awarded to the wrestler that lost to the higher finisher. Sectionals is already set up as 16 man.

I really like this solution. I just want to get my thoughts out there before regionals. Maybe I am way off but I truly believe that not one single weight class in the 4 regionals of the Bowen sectional will have more than 10 participants. I truly believe only 4 total regionals in 1A will have any weight classes with over 10 participants. My guess is 5% of the entire 1A weight classes will be effected by the 5 match rule. No BS has come up with IMO a plausible solution. His solution would avoid student-athletes from having to get out of school early not to mention the extra weigh in. I was going to mention the money the IHSA would save on refs. I have since been told that the 1A refs are not receiving any pay differential than their 2 & 3A counterparts. If I am wrong I will gladly apologize to the powers that be.

You could even make the regional 3/4 place match a pigtail at sectionals on Friday. The result of this match could effect the team race.

          1. Why should it? You should be able to make weight 2 days in a row. There’s already the 2 lb growth allowance that went into effect after Christmas and you get the additional 1 lb consecutive day allowance Saturday morning. The advancers are going to have to do it 2 straight days next week and the medalist types are going to have to do it 3 straight days at state. And every year there are kids in all 3 classes, including some studs, who blow weight at one of the 3 levels.

2.Why should they? 12 of the 16 1A regionals have 11 or 12 teams, which means the potential is there. There have been cases in the past where kids are eliminated due to the 6 match rule.

          3. See #2

          4. You want to tell a kid you’re out because some people want to stubbornly stick to 1 day regionals?

          5. It’s a couple hours. If they are that iffy academically, maybe they shouldn’t be wrestling or in any extracurricular activity.

          6. IMO, it’s not a problem.

CT I consider you a geographical poster. In the past correctly pointing out that it is actually harder for the 3A schools in your area to qualify wrestlers since the 3 class system was put in place. I have read posts of yours on how the majority of private schools are not wrestling powerhouses and you are always quick to let us know what is going on in your neck of the woods. I guess I was being a little territorial in my observations. I am advocating for the CPS schools. There is absolutely no need for 2 day regionals in that sectional. When the assignments 1st came out I thought they sent some city schools to Wilmington to even numbers out and make sure there was no need for 2 days. My guess is less than 50% of the city wrestlers that lose on Friday night at Wilmington come back on Saturday. I realize in the other 3 sectionals there will be a few weights that have enough wrestlers to warrant 2 days. That will not be the case in any regional in the Bowen sectional. Way too many wrestlers will be weighing in on Friday night and not even wrestling a match.

Recovery time is typically 6 weeks. Not sure how he could even be allowed to practice or allowed to wrestle in about a month. Seems a little fishy if you ask me.

Jason Witten broke his jaw and played the very next week. Different breaks/healing time for everyone

                        This ain't the pros joe

I just hope the kid is really healed up and not being put in further/more serious damage. Tolono seems to bend the rules with their "transfers" this year and now this kid recovers faster than expected. Wouldn't surprise me that his jaw is still healing is all that I'm saying.

I am sure this has nothing to do with rule bending, Micah is a great competitor and if he has been cleared then he should wrestle, it shows a lot of mental toughness that kids seem to lack these days.

Back to the subject. Based on entries 1 sectional has 4 weights with 11 covering 2 regionals. Another has 2 weights from 2 regionals. A 3rd regional has 2 weights from 1 regional. And as expected the 4th has no weights with over 10 wrestlers. Now these numbers could go up or down after weigh ins when brackets become official.

Numbers can change after weigh ins, but looking at trackwrestling and showing the number of entrants at each weight in the 1a regionals there are by my count:

5 of 16 regionals have at least 1 11 man bracket
a total of 8 brackets across all regionals have 11
