I actually went to the "chat" on Intermat to get Ramos' score. I haven't checked the brackets in a few hours. Ramos also lost in the consolation semis.

Just walked in the door at home, 3am here. Great tournament, talent is well above our state tournament, top wrestlers from around the country getting knocked off all over the place. A few notes --
Felipe Martinez is as good as he is billed. he beat Cody Kelly, a PA state placer and later Tony Ramos. Tony was up 2 -1 when Martinez appeared to bear hug Tony to his back for 5 at the end of the first period. The 6 - 1 deficit was too much to recover from. Martinez rides like a monster, Tony had a tough time getting out. Whoever got the 5 point move would have won the match.
The controversy in Tony's consolation match with Cody Kelly was over a takedown. The wrestlers butted heads, Tony's head is harder than Kelly's and thus Kelly fell to the mat and Tony covered him for an apparant takedown. However, the ref never awarded the 2 points ruling the injury was before the 2 points were given. Later in the match, Tony shot in with elbows a little wide and got thrown to his back. Tough tournament for him, but on another day, same brackets he could come out on top, the talent is that good and truly that close.
The biggest Illinois splash was Carl Foreside. The top 4 at 189 were all within a point or 2 of each other. Anyone of the 4 could have won the tournament. Robertson placing as a sophmore and Goebel placing up at 215 were big time accomplishments. Gonzalez lost the 3rd place match to the kid he knocked out in the quarters (no walkovers here), could have just as easily been third, great tournament for him as well.
The tournament was not quite as ugly as some might think for Illinois. GBN and Mt. Carmel are not at the same level they were the last 2 years. Montini was probably stonger as a team last year as well. However, facing the kind of talent at Ironman makes many great wrestlers look ordinary.
Another great matchup was the 171 lbrs, Ruth and Phillips with Ruth wining a close match in the semis. He went on to easily beat Lofthouse from Utah in the finals. This kid is the real deal and will be someone to watch on the next level.
Getting late and time for me to crash....maybe more later, maybe not.Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules, and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.
