    IHSA ByLaw 5.163 Individual Limitations
Students who participate on a school squad in Boys Wrestling may participate in no more than twenty-one (21) matches in any one season, exclusive of tournaments. Students may participate in no more than four (4) tournaments exclusive of the IHSA State Tournament Series except that a student who does not participate in the IHSA State Tournament Series may participate in one (1) additional tournament. Participation in a tournament shall mean that a student actually competes (regardless of the length of the time) in a match.

NFHS rule 1-2-2 states that no wrestler can compete in more than 5 matches per day.

I do not mean to take the forum in the wrong direction but I have a question and it seems there is some good conversation here that might be able to answer. What is the ruling for the amount of matches a kid can have in a schoolasitc year? Or what is the amount of events a kid can particiapte in during the season?

The event is not a problem; it is non-IHSA because it is scheduled for Sunday, which is the first day after the Saturday of Week 34 of the IHSA Standardized Calendar. However, IHSA coaches have to be careful under the non-contact rules for out-of-season non-summer activities. Althoug many IHSA coaches attend the meet, most do not come to the mat, at least the smart ones.

Well, this is an individual event, not a team competition. It's been around for more than a decade, so I'm pretty sure the IHSA would have done something by now if they were upset about it.

Coaches have to be REALLY careful if they coach their athletes outside of the regular season.
IHJSA ByLaw2.090, etc. SEASON LIMITATION IN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES
No school belonging to this Association shall organize its teams, practice, scrimmage or participate in any interscholastic sport outside of the season limitations as prescribed in Section 5.000 of these By-Laws; nor shall any person who coaches any sport at a
member school, coach or supervise a non-school team in any interscholastic sport composed of students from that school, except within the guidelines promulgated by the IHSA Board of Directors.

    Yes - Coaches Coach

High School coaches do coach their kids.

And you have always been able to get an AAU Card at the door but it seems like this year you have to order it online. I would contact one of the host schools to check on that.

Since when do HS coaches follow IHSA rules? Call them on it and suffer the wrath!

Thanks for the quick response. I have another question. Does my kid have to have a coach? I got him the AAU/Added Benefit card online that from what I'm reading allows him to participate w/o a coach??? (Unfortunately, my younger boy has IESA Regionals that same day and I'll be coaching him and our team that day)

yeah they don't have to go to Regionals. Some teams like Libertyville still send their guys to the regional though. I believe those that show up to sectionals get fed to or pigtail into the 1 seed.
