  • IL All-Star team...

If we put together an All-Star team, regardless of class, what would it look like, and how would it stack-up vs the other top states like OH, PA, etc...????

Oh yea...my picks for Illinois would not all be state champs...particularly at 106 and 145.

106: Matt Rundell - yes, he lost to Chris Williams at state, but beat him at sectionals...bottom line, vs out of state competition he pinned Woiwor from Apple Valley.

113: Johnny Jimenez - the best at this weight class...over McGhee and Northrup.

    120: Jered Cortez

    126: Eddie Klimara

    132: Zane Richards

138: Angelo Silvestro - tough call over Langenderfer, but Dvorak and Cheesehead...

145: Bryce Brill - like 106lbs...I have to go with the the kid I would rather put out on the mat vs out of state competition.

    152: Max Schneider

160: Shaunqae McMurtry - with wins over both Koethe and Kingsley...he can hang with the national studs

    170: Jake Residori

182: Sam Brooks - bonus points vs just about any other state champ in the country

195: Brad Johnson/Gage Harrah - either one = win vs most states

    220: Josh Marchok/Mike Swider - see above

    285: James Buss

I know that vs Ohio and PA their are going to be some tough match-ups...

If you are talking about national experience and success as a determining factor in choosing between two kids, I don't see how you can pass over Dylan Reel. He has proven himself on more than one occasion.

Good point...I should have mentioned Dylan...I think either he or McMurtry would be competative vs national competition.

Nope...just the eye test...so you can "unroll" yours. I want to see how we might stack up vs PA, OH, IA, MN, etc...

            Just a quick look...

Against PA, at 106 we would be competative, but not favored; I give both Jimminez and Cortez wins at 113 and 120. We lose 126 but win 132. We probably lose 138...at 145...tough call. Brill definitely could win, but would be a toss-up. At 152 Max gets bonus points, but at 160...as tough as McMurtry is...he isn't going to beat Marsteller and 170 is also a loss. We sweep 3 straight matches with potential bonus points from 182-220. Buss would probably get beat, but it would be a tight match.

Against Ohio, we have toss-up matches 106-120. We lose to Heil at 126, but I give Richards the edge over Bright at 132. I think we trade again at 138 and 145lbs. At 152lbs...wow...Bo Jordan vs Max Schneider...and at 160 Issac Jordan vs McMurtry. Brutal. We aren't beating Martin at 170lbs...but they are going to get crushed vs Brooks at 182 or Johnson/Harrah at 195. Marchok wins at 220, we lose a close one at 285.

            Would be cool to see...

I do not think Cortez v. Gaytan is a toss up. Cortez takes that, although CA's best 120 may be in 8th grade. I think CA wins 138. Martinez v Schneider would be an awesome match, but I agree that Martinez wins. Sammie beats Nikko. Is Johnson considered an IL kid, if so IL wins HWT. 8-6 in matches. Bonus points could come into play and 106 could be disasterous for IL depending on who competes at 106.

Rundell also lost a pressure match to Jim Pelligrino who didn't place in the individual tournament. Not a good indicator.

Rundell wrestled lights out all year in matches big and not so big...yes, he's a freshman and still learning (very quickly I might add), but I take him over any 106 pounder (and 95% of 113 pounders) every time....

                      I hadnt seen Nathan Jackson @ 170 until the Indiana/Illinois dual....but wow!

I would think about him over Residori.

Keep in mind that the guy he is taking down 9 times in that match is an undefeated Indiana state champ(one class)

106 Williams/Pawelski/Rundell/Moody (I don’t think any of these guys are remarkably better than one another, just pick one. I don’t think it’s fair to punish Williams because he doesn’t wrestle out of state.)
                        113 Jimenez/McGee
120 Cortez (bench could be Pique, Garelli, Early, Powell)
126 Klimara (Bench could be Spraggins, Davis, Synon)
132 Richards (Chris Garcia on bench)
                        138 Silvestro or Langenderfer
                        145 Brill or Moylan
                        152 Schneider or Murphy
                        160 McMurtry (Reel on bench)
170 N Jackson (Residori and Robertson on bench)
182 Congenie (If Congenie can’t wrestle then Brooks. Dechow and McGiffin on bench)
                        195 Johnson or Harrah
                        220 Marchok (Swider on bench)
285 Buss/Bain/Allen none of these guys are remarkably better than the others…I’ve never seen Michael Johnson Jr wrestle but I’ve heard he’s better than any of these guys…maybe him?

I think people don’t realize that a lot of these guys are about equal in ability actually. Look at 106, 145, 170. Just because those two guys avenged their losses at state doesn’t mean they are better than the other in my book; it just makes them about equal. I think this is the best team Illinois could put out there IMO. Someone try and prove me wrong.

I would put Congenie at 195 as I think he beats the 2 listed. If Johnson not available at HWT, then Marchok probably beats any of the heavies listed. How did I do?

Nothing against Eddie, but you need to look at who he would be going up against. Would be very tough for him vs Dean Heil (OH) or either Gulibion/Malone from PA...
