Congratulations to everyone who earned the green jacket and thank you to the Illinois Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for putting on a wonderfully inspiring event. It was an honor to learn about and hear from each of the inductees. They represent what makes Illinois wrestling so special.

Can we get a little info on why each of these people were brought into the hall of fame?

But the website is not updated. The program had a nice writeup on each inductee, but they are too long for a post. Zane Richards -2X state champion- was the Dave Schultz award winner, Mike Powell - OPRF head coach - received the medal of courage, Mark Mestemacher - the driving force behind the Edwardsville Wrestling Club - received the oustanding American honor, Dan Fulscher - a long-time referee, Mark Johnson- former head coach at Illinois, Dave Klemm- former head coach at Lincoln Community College, Tom Porter- also a former head coach at Illinois and Marty Williams- a former coach, athletic director and principal at Mahomet Seymour High School, all received lifetime achievement awards. These short descriptions in no way do justice to their accomplishments.

You could write resumes a MILE long on Porter, Johnson, and Powell.

I don't think Tom Porter was ever head coach at Illinois. I think he was also a Mahomet head coach if I'm not mistaken, who coached numerous 1A state champion teams in the 80s. I believe he is the father of former state champion wrestlers Brett Porter who is the current head coach at Matoon and Rob Porter, the current head coach at Naperville Central.

Tom was Head Coach @ Illinois from '73 for 5 years. Also, coached at Mahomet....& the Father of Rob & Brett. Outstanding wrestler for Thornton High, & a Coach for Hersey (2 State titles) in early 70's......an overdue Lifetime Achievement award.
