  • Main East Sectional Updates

Here is a quick break down of the matches I saw yesterday at the Main East Finals.

I was only able to stay until the beginning of the Cortez-White match and would love to hear from anyone else there as to the remaining matches.

    106 Compos Fuentez:

Good action in the first period Compos in on a great shot finished and turned Fuentez late in the first. Second period great scrambled started with Compos on his back good bridge and turn to put Fuentez on his back for the fall.

    113 Calkins Townsell

Townsell started early with two really great shots converted to a body lock. Both great throws. Calkins worked quickly off his back near on one throw and the second was stopped. I didn't get the stoppage or the fact that Townsell didn't get any near on the second throw. My best guess is that the throw was considered a sup because it certainly wasn't a slam. IMHO it was a prefect throw and shouldn't have been stopped. Happy to hear anyone else's thought on that second throw. At that point it was 4 to 1 Townsell. Calkins handled the throws very well and stayed very much in the match and ended up putting Townsell to his back for the win. 9 to 6 final. Excellent match by both young men.

    120 Marmolejo Rundell

Several good scrambles Rundell did a nice job working out of a couple of near take downs. Honestly can't recall if the take down happened in the second period or third, but Marmolejo finished a good shot and Rundell's escaped came in the third I believe for the final 2 1.

    126 Cortez White

One of the matches that I was really looking forward to seeing but needed to leave early in the first period. Cortez converted on a good shot and was doing a fine job riding white when I left.

If anyone has any details on the finals yesterday please feel free to share them.

I had only one complaint about the 113lbs match. The ref warned Townsell after the 2nd throw...I couldn't tell if there was enough time left for back points to be awarded. The problem was that the ref was now in Townsell's head, and if you saw the last exchange when he was up 6-4 with about 30 seconds remaining, he started to throw and then hesitated...and that gave Calkins the opportunity to throw him and get the 5 points. Having said that, Townsell should never have tied up. He was leading by two points with about 30 seconds left and hadn't even been warned for stalling...this to a kid who teched him earlier in the year. Calkins is VERY tough. Ah well...

126 - Cortez wrestled very conservatively; he built a 5-0 lead and hung on for a 5-2 win. White was a gamer and went hard but had a tough time scoring. Cortez is SO tough on top...he rides like a college wrestler.

132 - Close match. Early wins 4-3 over Vela.

138 - Galiardo 12-6 over Murray. This weight class turned out to be a wild one; O'Mara loses to Murray in OT in the quarters, Annareno loses to Galiardo on a very controversial TD as time expires. Because of the drawing, O'Mara had to face Annareno in an elimination match, losing 4-3. Ironically, Galiardo who lost 7-1 to O'Mara at regionals last week wins the sectional. Tough weight class!

145 - Gahagan loses in OT to Schoen 2-1. Lots of scrambling, very little scoring. Schoen got the ride out in the 2nd OT and the escape in the 3rd OT for the win.

152 - Murphy wins 8-3 over Bey. Murphy pretty much controlled the match.

160 - Mahomes Maj Dec 17-6 over Davis. It wasn't that close. Mahomes was able to get a TD just about any time he wanted.

170 - Rematch of the regional finals; Rowland wins a 2-0 dec over Stallings.

182 - Ariola over Monreal-Berner 8-2 (it was actually 10-2...the scorers table missed the last TD). Monreal-Berner got in on Ariola's legs a few times...simply couldn't finish.

195 - Cleveland over Lee 6-1. A lot closer than the score. Very exciting match. Lee was in for the TD numerous times in the 3rd period, score tied 1-1, but couldn't finish. Cleveland had been running an excellent whizzer defending, and was finally able to catch Lee with the whizzer and hip over for a 5-point move with just 15 seconds left for the 6-1 win.

Left after this match. Side note: very impressed with the Wheaton North and Glenbard East kids. Well coached, tough wrestlers.

Match was stopped because time had expired in period before 2 near fall could be earned. Takedown was good, so score was 6-1 starting 2nd period.
