I am posting this with great sadness. The Illinois wrestling community lost one of their own this past Saturday. Providence alumni Ronald Triche tragically lost his life way too early.
I feel compelled to write this because it is so important to keep things in perspective. As Ronnie's coach, or any wrestler for that matter, there is nothing I look forward to more than to watch them grow and mature into fine young men. That's the whole point of wrestling, right? That's the reason why I coach. Sure, success is great and wonderful. However, it is watching these boys become great men BECAUSE of the experiences and lessons learned from this great sport that is the true measure of accomplishment.
Ronnie made me proud in so many ways. Sure he was an All-State wrestler, but that is the last thing I think of when I think of Ronnie. For those of you whom had the pleasure of knowing/meeting him, there is no doubt his attitude and infectious smile were some of the first things you noticed. I will remember the Ronnie that was too small to wrestle the lowest weight class in high school freshman year. He exemplified the true wrestler's spirit as he stayed the course, kept his positive attitude and smile, and fought his way to become one of the state's best wrestlers. I will miss you Ronnie. Thank you for allowing me to be your coach. Rest In Peace buddy.
