  • Forfeits: Injury vs Poor Sportsmanship

IMO there has been a very disturbing trend developing over the past few years. This year there were some DEFINITE injuries... hobbled knees, popped shoulders and flu symptoms that kept some wrestlers from starting or finishing a match and limiting their performance. I totally agree with holding these guys out to insure their safety. But then I see some guys lose- they look completely healthy walking or even "running" off the mat only to Forfeit the rest of the matches in the tournament. I hope the parents and coaches teach these young men that IN LIFE you are not always going to win and be #1 but you need to pick yourself up go out there compete and do your best EVERY match you are able.

Not sure if this has anything to do with your post, but what happened to Luke Odom? We left to go eat after the 2A prelims and I saw he lost his 1st match and medical F his wrestle back. I was really expecting to see him put on a stellar performance this weekend! Sick, injured, what? Anyone know?

I thought someone here had posted that Odom may have been dealing with a concussion?

I was bummed to see TFM default out after the semi's. I understand it, but as a fan, would have loved to have seen him compete in what should have been some very good matches on the backside.

TFM was on crutches. Would of been hard to compete.

This post was titled "Injury vs poor sportsmanship". Twist wanted us to know which side to put Melton on.

As a guy who wasn't there, I was unaware. Thanks for the heads up. Was just going off track brackets that didn't mention inj. default.

Loved watching him compete over the years looking forward to following him in college as well. Hope it's nothing too serious.

My guess would be that his injury prevented him from making weight. If you do not weigh in for day 3 they call it a fft. not a medical dflt. I saw him front row cheering on his teammate in the finals. He was definitely on crutches. I also spoke to an Edwardsville insider who said that Odom was concussed in the 1st period of the Nolan match.

Ford-Melton could barely walk back to the center when his match ended

An insider told you that? He didn't wrestle Zaccone.

I wouldn't doubt the toughness of any wrestler that makes it to state. Head butts & kneeing aside, they should start phasing in slightly softer mat surfaces before wrestling faces what football is regarding concussions - particularly for the little kids. I once read that wrestling was in the top 2 for concussions in college sports, but then again head butting is more severe in college.
There are two guys in that zebra costume! Very funny...

I think he may have misspoke, but I was also told Odom had a concussion - by one of the Edwardsville coaches.

TFM, for what it's worth, has had a knee issue for much of the season, but sustained an ankle injury - hence the crutches, for anyone wondering why he defaulted out and/or saw him on crutches.

My bad. The Nolan match. Watched Zaccone-Lopez then Nolan- Odom basically back to back. Two great 1st round matches. Mixed up the matches. Man is my memory going fast.
