MC could be favorite. But huge favorite? I think Montini would look forward to that challenge as the underdog.

Montini 113 Fernau was wrestling a weight up and still had success as a freshman. Stauffenberg had a nice season as a freshman as well its easy to forget that these Montini kids wrestle year round and they're only going to get better. Its impossible to replace the #1 wrestle in the country, but Montini has a freshman 195lb that will qualify for state next year maybe even medal. Whoever doesn't think Montini is the favorite is kidding themselves

Prior to Montini's two state championships, 3A was dominated by public schools. From 2009 to 2017 the 3A state dual championship was won by public schools. Yes, Montini and Marmion were part of 2A for a few of these years, but public schools like Lockport and OPRF showed they can beat these super private schools during this time period to win IHSA state titles. Not to mention, Sandburg beat St. Rita in 2006 and also beat Montini in 2007 to win state titles.

This said, there are some public schools in the country that can compete against some of the top private schools. This hasn't been the case recently in Illinois because of Montini. Montini has greatly improved their recruiting which has made them one of the best teams in country.
I'm not sure they actually stepped up their recruiting. Who wouldn't want to go wrestle at one of the top schools in the country. Who has one of the best coaches in the country. A great bunch of Assistants. A Nationwide schedule where you can expose yourself for college recruiters. And a school with excellent academics.I think it sells itself.

You're not kidding about Fernau...who beat a tough state qualifier at 106 from Barrington, then lost a close 3-0 decision to Curran from DeKalb, who placed 6th at 113. Then went on to tech Nagela from OPRF in the finals! Tough kid who we will definitely hear more about.

But nothing more impressive than Jake Rundell from OPRF...back just a week after missing state due to bout with MRSA...beating both the state champ at 120 (Ramos 4-0), then beating the 3rd place state finisher, Jaffe from Marmion (3-0)... THEN bumping to 126 in the finals to take on the state champ Ragusin, only losing 3-0. Rundell was my Dual State MVP! What guts... and he's back next year!

Montini is the favorite until someone does something about it. Next in-line would be the teams that finished behind them. Can’t jump ranks just because someone says so. Best coach in the state and the results to back it. Crazy dads already wishing for next year. Let the top four enjoy what they “did” instead of talking what someone “might” do next year.

Well put. Every year MtC is overrated and they prove where they belong by the end of the season.

That is super impressive. Would've been really something if he'd pulled it off in the last match! Flowrestling took Rundell out of the national rankings after state tournament. Looks pretty dumb in hindsight.

Dekalb is a nice story, so is Lockport. Its nice to see new teams hang at the top, even Barrington was a new name in the mix. New young coaches bringing in more horses, at least in Lockport. Maybe some 3A teams will drop to 2A and make waves there...
There are two guys in that zebra costume! Very funny...

Deerfield will be dropping to 2A next year. Although this is the 3A forum, I have to say Coal City in their first year in 2A goes all the way to the finals losing to Washington. Very impressive.
