It is with a heavy heart I want to inform you of the passing of Betty Martinez, the first lady of Illinois wrestling.
She was truly a pillar of support and strength to so many. Together they helped build the sport in our state into what it's become: something we can all take pride in.
She was a role model for all of the women in the sport. Wrestling moms, coaches' wives, wrestling club administrators -- all of these folks could look to Betty as a shining example of what to be.
It was my honor to know her personally, albeit briefly. Much too briefly. To hear the pride in her voice when we talked about her grandchildren or her husband's off-the-mat heroics literally saving a man's life by pulling him unconscious out of a burning vehicle.
They gave Jose the key to the city of Aurora for his heroic effort. There should be an honor 100X greater to recognize what Betty has given to all of us.
