ILLINI Preview: UTC and ARMY

FREE PREVIEW OF ILLINOIS VS CHATTANOOGA AND ARMY

WHAT: Duals with Chattanooga and Army West Point
WHERE: Chattanooga, Tennessee
WHEN: Sunday, November 10 at 9am and 1pm (Central)

THE BIG STORY: The real question starting the season is, Who starts this season? After the MSU Open, we had some questions answered, some questions remained, and new questions raised by what happened over the weekend. For example, both Pio and Byrd wrestled unattached in East Lansing. Who will wrestle in these duals at 133? Mike Carr (141 or 149) and Brian Burns (285) completely missed the MSU Open. Then, there were injuries to presumed starters, including Joey "Guns" Gunther (174) and Danny Braunagel (165). Are those fellows healthy? That's half the lineup!

The good news is that the ILLINI coaches could start reserves at those weights and still probably beat UTC. The bad news is that that team would probably get beat by a pretty damn good Fightin' Army squad.

RANKED WRESTLERS: I'm going to list all of the ranked wrestlers on Intermat among the three teams: Travis Piotrowski (10 @ 133), Michael Carr (11 @ 149), Eric Barone (20 @ 157), Cael McCormick, Army (12 @165), Ben Harvey, Army (8 @ 174), Joey Gunther (15 @ 174). These rankings are up to date, but they leave out both Braunagels. Yet, Cameron Caffey is ranked #18? Brawny 1 beat him! There are no Moccasins in the Intermat Top Twenty. The big showdowns could be at 165 and 174 in the dual with Army.

THE CHATTANOOGA DUAL: When your university sounds like a candy bar or an instant messaging startup or a choo-choo train, you probably can't expect much from the wrestling team. The second strike against you is having Tennessee as your recruiting base. Wrestlestat.com is predicting a 30-3 win for the ILLINI, but that includes Luffman in the lineup. Additionally, the dual can be much closer if the ILLINI are forced to use reserves at 174, 165, 149 and 133.

The lone predicted win for the Moccasins is at 125. Fabian Gutierrez is a redshirt junior with a 42-22 college record. Cardani and the Moc have similar records against common opponents. This should be a good match, as wrestlestat has Gutierrez as the #20 wrestler in the country. Another good match would be #36 Chris Debien versus Dylan Duncan. The ILLINI, though, has a decided advantage over common opponents, 8-6 versus Debien's 3-8.

Finally, the matches from 184 to heavyweight could be tight. Zac Braunagel will face a fifth-year senior in Dominic Lampe who has a 42-27 career record. This will be Lampe's third year in the Moc's starting lineup. Predicted score: ILLINI 30, Chattanooga 9.

THE ARMY DUAL: When I first clicked on Wrestlestat.com to get its prediction for the dual, it showed a 15-15 tie. Their prediction includes Pio in the lineup at 133, Carr at 141, Gunther at 165 and Luffman at heavyweight. If you plug in We Rachal at 133, Dylan Duncan at 141 (with Carr at 149), David Riojas at 174 and Brian Burns at heavyweight, the wrestlestat prediction is an 18-12 win for Army.

If one of Pio or Gunther wrestles, it's back to a tie. If both wrestle, it's a win for the ILLINI. Of course, that's just some computer's opinion. It also proves yet again that wrestlestat.com hates the ILLINI as if the ILLINI slept with wrestlestat.com's mother and then posted about it on social media. ("Meh. I've had better computer programs."). While the ILLINI were wrestling in the MSU Open, this is what Army was doing:

Quote:

Wisconsin 16, Army 15

125: Michael Cullen (Wisconsin) over Trey Chalifoux (Army) (Dec 3-1)
133: Seth Gross (Wisconsin) over Lane Peters (Army) (MD 12-0)
141: Tristan Moran (Wisconsin) over Corey Shie (Army) (Dec 5-0)
149: PJ Ogunsanya (Army) over Cole Martin (Wisconsin) (Dec 6-3 TB1)
157: Lucas Weiland (Army) over Garrett Model (Wisconsin) (Dec 5-2)
165: Evan Wick (Wisconsin) over Cael McCormick (Army) (Dec 9-2)
174: Ben Harvey (Army) over Tyler Dow (Wisconsin) (Dec 4-2)
184: Noah Stewart (Army) over Johnny Sebastian (Wisconsin) (Dec 3-1)
197: JT Brown (Army) over Taylor Watkins (Wisconsin) (Dec 8-2)
285: Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) over Ben Sullivan (Army) (Dec 7-0)
KEY MATCHUPS: The most interesting matchups might be at 174 if Gunther wrestles the #8 ranked Ben Harvey and at 165, with #12 Cael McCormick up against Danny Braunagel. Harvey is a two-time NCAA qualifier, and he made it to the blood round a couple of years ago. As long as he stays healthy, he'll have 100+ wins at West Point.

McCormick started for Army last year and qualified for the NCAA tournament where he finished 1-2. He had a big upset over Demetrius Romero of Utah Valley, but he had a 4-1 loss to Mekhi Lewis and a 5-4 loss to the ILLINI's Joey "Guns" Gunther.

The rest of the Army team is freaking solid from top to bottom. They don't have a single starter lower than #44 at wrestlestat.com. This would be a big win against a top-notch team if the ILLINI can pull it off.

Just watched Joey "Guns" Gunther's final match at the Michigan State Open. He won two matches and then forfeited out. He wasn't wearing any knee braces or sleeves of any kind, and he seemed to be doing fine. Maybe precautionary or the flu? I don't know.

WARILLINI!!!

WARILLINI!!!

Army has some quality guys. If Rachal and Joudah both wrestle, the Illini lose this dual, in my opinion.

jay31 11-10-2019 08:10 AM

So apparently there will be no redshirt for Luffman. I for one am glad to see it because that has been a painful spot at the end of duals more often than not ever since Brooks Black was done, no disrespect intended to Deuce.

So far the Illini are getting a beat down!

Not a good start for Illinois. No Duncan no Carr. Great stream in the Chattanooga website though if you’re looking to watch some Sunday morning wrestling.

Great finish by the ILLINI! I found that stream in time to see all of 184-Hvy. The Braunagels beat good opponents and are both 6-1 on the year. Wrobo-cop came through a tight one with a takedown in SV. Luffman is now 5-0 on the year and beat a really good, veteran heavyweight. Loved the footsweep to a single!

That was a great comeback but not enough to make up for the bonus points Army got in the lower weights. Would love to see these two teams go at it again with Duncan and Carr in the lineup. This is a good Army team top to bottom.

Great stream! The camera angle was exceptional. Analysis was very good. Play-by-play fellow a tad weak. The video was never choppy or buffering. Maybe the best I've seen on the internet. Thanks for the tip, El Santo!

Army will now wrestle Chattanooga, then Chattanooga will wrestle the ILLINI. Check out the stream of the match by going to UTC's wrestling schedule and looking for "live video."

GO ILLINI!!!
