Final wrap: White, Jones make it 6 Fargo titles

Although Illinois finished only sixth in the Junior freestyle, Isaiah White (145) and Adarios Jones (285) won titles, giving the four Illinois boys teams six for the week.

Illinois’ nine Junior freestyle All-Americans gave them 66 for the week in the four events.

Particular kudos to Jones, who as a senior – when so few seniors do – came out and won all but one match over the course of the week, losing 2-0 in the Greco-Roman final to reigning FILA Junior World champion Sam Stoll of Minnesota.

But Illinois set a record this week that may never be matched – at least, by any other state. By winning the Cadet Greco, Junior Greco and Cadet freestyle tournaments earlier in the week, Illinois stretched its streak of consecutive Fargo team titles to eight over a three-year period. The last national tournament Illinois did not win was the 2012 Cadet freestyle, which was won by Pennsylvania.

So that means next year will be the time to start a new streak.
Here’s the honor roll of Cadet freestyle All-Americans for Illinois (double All-Americans in bold type):

100 – Louie Hayes, 3rd

106 – Kirk Johansen, 7th

120 – Kyle Akins, 8th

145 – Isaiah White, CHAMPION

152 – Luke Fortuna, 6th

182 – Nathan Traxler, 7th

285 – Adarios Jones, CHAMPION; Michael Hobbs, 6th; Bobby Carson, 7th

Congratulations to all on a great week!
