Brill gives Illinois the lead...barely

This is going to be a nail-biter, folks.

In one of the last matches of the evening Cadet National freestyle round-robin session, Bryce Brill became Illinois' fifth finalist with a three-period victory over Ohio's Stephen Myers.

The victory also gave Illinois a 69-68 lead over Minnesota at the top of the team standings heading into what promises to be a nerve-wracking finals and medal-matches round tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.

With the win, Brill joined Jered Cortez (112), Brian Murphy (140) and Sam Brooks (171), who punched their tickets to the finals earlier in the round, and Ben Whitford (125), who settled his pool in the morning session.

Zane Richards (130) and Brad Johnson (189) lost three-period heartbreakers in their round robin finals. Richards won the first period against two-time Minnesota state champion Dakota Trom, but Trom's size and horsepower advantages carried him to victory in the final two periods. Johnson also lost to a Minnesota opponent, Adam Josephson, in a third period which went to the wire before Josephson countered a double-leg shot by taking Johnson to his back.

Illinois has five in the finals, five going for third place, two going for fifth place and three going for seventh place. Minnesota's breakdown: three in the finals, seven going for third place and four going for fifth place. At 91 pounds, Minnesota wrestlers will be facing each other for both third and fifth place.

The All-America match breakdown for Illinois:

84 - Carlos Fuentes, seventh
105 - Sebastian Pique, third; Mark Duda, seventh
112 - Jered Cortez, finals; Barlow McGhee, fifth
119 - Bryce Brill, finals
125 - Ben Whitford, finals
130 - Zane Richards, third
135 - Angelo Silvestro, third
140 - Brian Murphy, finals
152 - Tim Corse, seventh
171 - Sam Brooks, finals; Jack Dechow, third
189 - Brad Johnson, third
215 - Taylor McGiffen, fifth
