2nd in All-Americans, 3rd on the scoreboard

Despite a rocky start and some early medal-round losses, Illinois didn't have a problem maintaining third place in the Cadet National Greco-Roman Championships at the FargoDome.

Pennsylvania romped to the team title by margins that Illinois is more used to, outscoring runnerup California 79-55. Illinois was third with 47. It was good enough to get Illinois' placing announced by the head table, anyway.

The final team Top 10:

1. Pennsylvania, 79
2. California, 55
4. Oregon, 41
5. New Jersey, 38
6. Michigan, 32
7. Florida, 30
8. Minnesota, 29
9. Wisconsin, 27
10. Kansas, 25

Five of Illinois' 12 All-Americans - second only to Pennsylvania's 14 - won their final matches, and a couple of them rebounded from first-period losses to win.

The biggest disappointment was getting shut out in the championship round, with all three Illinois finalists going down to defeat.

As previously reported, Jabari Moody won the first period of the 84-pound final 4-3, but Cody Jackson of Oregon countered a Moody shot with a headlock and a second-period pin at 1:18.

Two-time state qualifier Ricky Robertson gave Pennsylvania's nationally-ranked Eric Morris, a two-time National Prep runner-up at Wyoming Seminary, a run before losing 3-0, 1-0 as Morris defended Robertson's attempts at a front-headlock attack in the second-period clinch.

At 285, Michael Johnson lost in three periods to Minnesota state runnerup Sam Stoll. The two defended each other to split the first two periods, and Stoll bodylocked Johnson to his back on the edge for three points in the final minute of the third period, then added another takedown just before the clinch for a 4-0 decision.

Pennsylvania and California each had four champions. California took four straight from 119 through 135, with Elijah Davis (130) taking the Outstanding Wrestler award. None of California's four champions placed in the state tournament this year.

Here are the 12 All-Americans and where they finished:

84 - Jabari Moody, 2nd
98 - Austin Strzelczyk, 8th
105 - Jordan Laster, 8th
112 - Jon Marmolejo, 6th
119 - Darius Henry, 3rd
135 - Xavier Montalvo, 7th
145 - Davonte Mahomes, 3rd
160 - Ricky Robertson, 2nd
215 - Edgar Ruano, 7th; Cole Whitford, 8th (Ruano won their match 2-0, 1-0)
285 - Michael Johnson, 2nd; Adarios Jones, 5th

More on the Junior Greco later.
