In Defense of John Lockhart

.

THE MYTH

John Lockhart got lucky in a bunch of tie breakers to win an NCAA Championship.

THE REALITY

Everybody that Lockhart wrestled to win the 2001 NCAA heavyweight championship became an All-American except for one. In his first match, the ILLINI faced off against James Huml of Oklahoma State. Huml had won two NJCAA national championships, was the Outstanding Wrestler in one of them, and would make it into the Round of 16 in this tournament. Everybody else became an All-American.

The Reality is that John Lockhart had the toughest and unluckiest draw. He had to beat:

Round of 16, James Huml (Oklahoma State)
8th Place, All-American Jake Vercelli (Purdue)
7th Place, All-American Matt Brink (Michigan)
3rd Place, All-American, Olympic Medalist, 1st seed, Garrett Lowney (Minnesota)
2nd Place, All-American, 2nd seed, Tommy Rowlands (Ohio State)
