3-for-3 so far

Jordan Lind (84), Ben Whitford (125) and Zane Richards (130) all won their finals matches as Illinois continues to hang in the team race with Pennsylvania.

Lind beat Georgia eighth-grader Hunter Kelley 2-1, 3-1 in a solid performance. He picked up a gut wrench in each period.

Whitford had to come from behind twice to beat Josh Pennell of Michigan after losing the first period 6-0. It was scoreless going into the final 30-second session, but Whitford, who started on the bottom, got caught in a trap-arm gut off the whistle and was turned three times in quick succession.

He came back to win the second period, scoring on a pair of scrambles and a gut late in the period to win 5-0.

Pennell, who moved to St. Johns from the Detroit suburbs before last year, scored a pair of takedowns and led 2-0 in the final period. But Whitford ran over a double underhook at the edge for three points to lead 3-2, then countered a Pennell throw attempt with a hip toss to the back for three points out of bounds and a 6-2 win. Let's just say he showed more than little emotion at the end.

Richards also scored in the clinch session in the first period against National Prep Championships runnerup Brandon Jeske of Virginia, picking up a gut wrench and adding a caution and one later on for a 3-0 win. In the second period, he defended successfully in the final 30 seconds for a 1-0 win and his second Cadet Greco-Roman title. Jeske, who was at Richmond St. Christopher's School last year, is going to be at Virginia Beach Cox next year.

The team score stood at 53-51, Pennsylvania, through 119. Pennsylvania has split the last two finals matches, with Casey Kent losing in three periods to Isiah Martinez of California at 135 and Patrick Coover winning in two periods at 140.
