Chicago Cup to feature international freestyle wrestling at Wright College

For the third straight year, World Sport Chicago, in alliance with USA Wrestling, will host the Chicago Cup, a popular international wrestling competition featuring Team USA against top foreign competitors.

The Chicago Cup will be held on Sunday, November 15 at Wright College on the northwest side of Chicago. Technique demonstrations will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the Chicago Cup competition starting at 2:00 p.m.

“We are very pleased to be hosting the third annual Chicago Cup International Wrestling event,” said Bill Scherr, chairman of World Sport Chicago. “Events such as the Chicago Cup are a great opportunity for youth to meet world class athletes and experience the excitement of sport. As World Sport Chicago continues our mission of increasing the participation of Chicago youth in Olympic and Paralympic sport we believe events such as this help youth become aware of sport options and the programs we are helping create.”

This year, the U.S. men’s freestyle team will battle Russia in a full seven-match dual meet. Russia is the reigning World champion team in freestyle wrestling. There is a long and storied rivalry between the USA and Russia in Olympic freestyle wrestling.

In addition, there will be two women’s freestyle matches, featuring athletes from Team USA competing against Canadian opponents. Both the United States and Canada are among the top women’s wrestling powers in the world.

Two other exhibition matches are scheduled between wrestlers from Wright College and Kennedy King College, which are college wrestling programs located in Chicago.

The final lineups are not yet finalized, but will be announced shortly. There are expected to be a number of athletes who have won medals on the World and continental level who will compete at the Chicago Cup.

"USA Wrestling is excited to help present the Chicago Cup for the third straight year. Working with our partners at World Sport Chicago, we are able to bring the excitement of international wrestling to the public in the Chicago area. We expect this year's event to be very entertaining and competitive, and encourage everybody to come out to see Olympic-caliber wrestling," said Pete Isais, USA Wrestling Director of Events.

The Chicago Cup has featured outstanding competition in the past, and has been well received by sports fans in the community. Another large crowd is expected to attend this year.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and group rates are available. For more information and tickets, call 312-784-6016 or visit:

The first Chicago Cup was held in Evanston, Ill. in February 2007, and drew a tremendous crowd of over 7,000 fans. Russia defeated the USA in a men’s freestyle dual meet, with a victory by U.S. star Mo Lawal. In men’s Greco-Roman bouts, Lindsey Durlacher and Harry Lester scored victories over Chinese opponents. The USA and Canada split two women’s bouts, with Sara McMann scoring a victory for Team USA.

The second Chicago Cup was also in Evanston, Ill in February 2008. The USA defeated Bulgaria, 5-1, in a Greco-Roman dual meet. Illinois natives Lindsey Durlacher and T.C. Dantzler won matches for the USA, along with Harry Lester, Justin Ruiz and Dremiel Byers. The USA also won a women’s freestyle dual, defeating Poland, 3-2. American victories were by Stephanie Murata, Marcie Van Dusen and Stephany Lee.

Make plans to attend the Chicago Cup at Wright College on Sunday, November 15.
