Comparing college to high school - Part Six

By Andre’ Morgan /

While at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, I talked with a few selected Illinois wrestlers that wrestle for various teams around the United States. I became interested in what differences they had noticed in high school and college wrestlers. I am doing a series of feature articles on this subject.

Mario Morgan – Nebraska-Omaha (Mt. Carmel) 1x All State, 4x IHSA State Qualifier, 2x Freestyle State Champion, 3x Greco State Champ, 4x Chicago Catholic League Champ, 3x IKWF / IWF State Champ, 2x H.S. All American, 2x USA Wrestling Kids All American, NCAA National Qualifier, 1x National Dual Team Champion, currently ranked 6th @ 141 lbs

1. What are the differences you have noticed between h.s. and college wrestling?
“Your opponents make less mistakes so you have to wrestle more solid.”

2. In what ways do you train different from the way you did in h.s.?
“You have to do extra workouts year round to put you above everybody else.”

3. Were you prepared for the college level coming out of h.s.?
“I think my high school prepared me both academically and athletically. The study habits and note taking instilled at Mt. Carmel allowed me to be comfortable right away. Athletically we always had a very hard schedule and it helped me compete right away with the other new wrestlers.”

4. Describe the differences in the coaching and officiating in college?
“The rules are more lenient. You can be more physical and you can get away with more stuff.”

5. What differences in the team aspect do you notice between h.s. and college?
“You live with these guys. Your teammates are with you everyday. You create a closer bond which creates more camaraderie.”

6. How good is Illinois wrestling compared to the wrestlers from other states you face?
“Illinois is right there with any other state. On any given day Illinois can beat anyone from any state on any team on any level of college wrestling.”

7. Describe balancing the academics and athletics of college versus h.s.?
“In college there is more free time. You have a choice of not to go to class but that is not a good choice. For me it (more free time) made both class and wrestling easier. In h.s. class is 5 days a week, while college may be only a couple of days. That makes it easier to balance academics and athletics. I have more time to study and to practice.”
