Day 1 Recap: Big Three Roll

Day 1 of the individual state tournament, by the numbers:

• The state tournament’s Big Three, by class, won 32 of 34 matches in Thursday’s first round. And both losses were by a single point.

Montini went a perfect 12-for-12 in its final 2A tournament for a while, and the Broncos weren’t even tested. Jimmy Pawelski (106), Vince Turk (138), defending state champion Chris Garcia (145), Edgar Ruano (220) and Michael Johnson (285) all had pins, and the Broncos added four technical falls and a major decision. Even the two decisions weren’t close, both coming by six points.

Best of the rest: Geneseo advanced six to the quarterfinals and Washington had five.

Oak Park-River Forest got wins from all but one of its 12 qualifiers, though the Huskies found the going a little reougher in rugged 3A, with only top-ranked Jason Renteria (106) scoring a pin. Matt Rundell (152) had a technical fall and Larry Early (145), Kamal Bey (160) and Davonte Mahomes (170) added major decisions.

Best of the rest: Marist advanced eight to the quarterfinals, while Marmion Academy advanced seven.

Josh Alber (132), who pinned Adam Boyer of Warrensburg-Latham at 1:42 to keep his career unbeaten streak current, was one of four Indians to record pins, and they added two technical falls and two major decisions.

Best of the rest: Plano advanced seven to the quarterfinals, and Shelbyville went a perfect 6-for-6 Thursday.

• Why do more people not come to the first day of the state meet? Could be the lack of competitiveness of many matches.

That’s what happened with the advent of the 16-man bracket. Long the standard in many other states, Illinois is learning what many other states have always experienced: the 1-vs.-4 matchup in the first round is generally a mismatch.

And where did sectional champions enjoy the most lopsided success? Surprise: in ultra-competitive Class 3A.

The 48 Class 3A sectional champions combined to go 54-2 in the first round, and they piled up plenty of bonus wins. Those 54 victories included 13 pins, five technical falls and 13 major decisions – almost two-thirds of the wins.

Class 2A champions went 52-4, winning almost half those matches – 23 – by pin. With eight technical falls and eight major decisions, three-fourths of those wins included bonus points.

Fourth-place finishers actually fared best in Class 1A, winning five times. The champions’ 51-5 record also included 23 pins, with six technical falls and six major decisions.

In most cases, the 11 No. 4 seeds who recorded victories barely won. Two matches were decided in overtime, four more were decided by one point and three others by two points. Bobby Alexander (132) of Conant, an 8-2 winner in 3A, and Nic Berty (195) of Robinson, who scored a pin in 1A, were the only No. 4 seeds to win a match by more than two points.

The two-class system produced many more upsets in the first round, when second-place finishers took on third-place finishers.

That should change starting tomorrow morning, though.

Rob- isn't there 56 sectional champs in each class, 3A, 2A, 1A?
14 weights x 4 sectional champs in each? Confused on how you got 48. Anyways, nice job on the recap, I enjoyed it.

Rob (or anyone), who were the 2 sectional champs in 3A to lose? You said they went 46-2. Curious....

Thank you.

Why do people not come out for the first day? A couple of reasons in my opinion. It's available online and on Trackwrestling. And they start on Thursday night. Many don't want to take that extra day off of work or spend the money for a 2nd night at a hotel. My guess is it's mostly parents there the first day and not as many fans in general.

You are correct. I just updated the article to reflect that.

Cool stats , thanks for putting that together. While most #4s do lose, it's very exiting when they win, and is reason enough to let them qualify, imo
