Bad news is the jam is out of the jar.

This is the new normal. Expect more of the same as long as there's a Republican in power.

When does it go back to normal? When will the folks in charge be appeased that the threat is over?

They won't.

If/when they develop a vaccine, I won't be getting it.

Buckle up buttercups.

Another 18,000 people die annually from staph infections, 20,000 from MRSA...ALL of these are highly infectious...now put that into perspective with Coronavirus.

So again I ask...are we all supposed to just huddle up in our homes and never venture out again for fear of catching a virus? Whether we want to admit it or not, we risk catching something every frigging day that will kill us.

THAT'S why I say this is getting blown out of proportion.
Since you want to be a numbers guy, here's a few for you to chew on:

The mortality rate for the seasonal flu virus is below 0.1%. (take note of the decimal point BEFORE the 1)

The mortality rate for COVID-19 is as "low" as 2% and could be as high as 4%. (no decimal before)

That is 20 to 40 times worse than seasonal flu.

I'm letting that sink in through some of the thick skulls out there.......

If the mortality rate was "only" 1% it would still be 10 times worse than the flu.

From WHO:

From Newsweek:
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...xebxyP&ampcf=1

We'll use your numbers -

With "The CDCs preliminary estimates for the 2019-2020 US flu season are 16K deaths with 280,000 hospitalizations and 19M infections." That means, even at 1% mortality, there could be +/- 190,000 deaths from this virus.

190 THOUSAND

I would hope that number would bring pause to some of the deniers.

With a mortality rate that high, the only way to prevent astronomical numbers of deaths is to minimize the number of infections.
I certainly hope that with precautions, vigilance and common sense that number would become much lower, but with the deniers out there (including Trump) who keep spouting false information, it doesn't look promising.

The stance that this pandemic is brought on and sensationalized by those who want to bring down Trump, or that they want more deaths to hurt Trump in the election, is the worst kind of stupidity. It comes from some news organizations who should be reporting the absolute truth in a case like this.
This transcends political beliefs.
At least it should...

But I am not surprised by that stance by some.

Currently the official number from the CDC is a death rate of 3.4%. Influenza A is 0.1%. That's 34 times the death rate of the flu. This number will undoubtedly change and most likely go down. This is because there is a huge number of "ghost cases" out there with people that never seek care secondary to mild, or "no" symptoms. Most sources say it will be 2.3%-3% once all is said and done. The current flu season is still ongoing and the CDC estimates that between 10,000 and 35,000 people have died in the US from the flu since October. It will probably come in at about 22,000 deaths. If you extrapolate that to COVID-19 that equals 575,000-750,000 deaths from COVID-19 (2.35-3% death rate x flu deaths). To give you perspective about 58,000 service men and women died in the Vietnam war (official dept of defense number).

The vast majority of the deaths will occur in those over the age of 60 (about 85%). Probably more than 70% of our population will get this eventually. Know what you are talking about before you state "facts".

It's weird that the infectious disease specialists in the thread are so stupid.

Sorry that measures have been taken to avoid becoming Italy.
