Jan 5, 2012 (Mike Clark)

Congenie and Willowbrook coach Bryan Murphy initially held out hope that he’d recover soon enough to have at least an abbreviated senior season and make a run at a third state championship.

But with regionals less than a month away, those hopes have all but disappeared.

“It sucks,” said Congenie, who came back from a torn left ACL in 2010 to win his second state title. “My surgeon ... gave me a big, ‘Hell, no,’ the last time I was there.”

According to Murphy, Congenie, who would have probably wrestled at 195 pounds this season, has done more than keep up with his workouts.

“He’s in great shape,” the coach said. “He can probably outrun everybody on my team right now.”

What drives Congenie crazy, of course, is that he can’t go out on the mat.

Congenie likely would have been on a collision course with another defending champ, Lockport’s Brad Johnson, this season but for the injury, and that would have been another great battle.

Unfortunately, this was a tough lesson to learn, both for him and for wrestling fans.
