THis is a disgusting incident happened today, at the campus of Va Tech. It is a true cowardly act of a desperate person, and it makes me sick. It really makes you realize this can happen anywhere, at anytime.
My Heart goes out to those victims and their families.

Unfortunately, our world has become a scarier place to live than ever before. No one knows what possesses people to do the things they do. Another sad event is the recent inmate that was released and started the house on fire that killed five innocent children. It makes you wonder whether you want to let your kids, no matter how old they may be, far from home. But you have to let them go and pray for their safety every day. Our hearts go out to the five innocent children lost and their families, as well as all of the families of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

Thanks for posting the link I hadn't watched the news or seen any details yet. Makes me want to hold me children a little tighter and a little longer tonight.
Wonder what ever possesses a person to lose control like that?!?!

In my opinion there is more preessure on you when your in college than at any time in your life. Not only are you still trying to make your way in this world while trying to break away from the nest, but you are still getting the old "as long as you live under my roof you will live by my rules" speech from time to time.

Do you ever see how the parents are stunned when interviewed? "Oh, i never noticed Timmy had 2 hand guns, a rifle, and a plan to shoot up his school, in his room."

My oldest kid has reported to me that this kid that sits next to him and always picks on him keeps saying that when he truns 30 he is going to kill a bunch of people and then kill himself. Then the other day he said he might not wait until hes 30. I wouldnt have given this much thought ten years ago but I had to say something. Now I am sure that somehow this whole thing will get turned around and somehow me or my kid will get blamed but this kid has said it to a number of kids. I am very interested in what happens. Oh and yes ace we see so much violence on tv and video games that it becomes 2nd nature and a way to get attention,.

I think Ace was being sarcastic in his "blame violence on TV and video games" theory. I for one have played all these games and have grown up watching violent movies. I think the only thing TV and videogames do is cause distractions from reality. Growing into a respectable person is all about parenting, and the desire to make something of yourself. I'm sure at some point the parents can't help anymore, but if they put in the time and effort to raise their kids the right way, then the kids should have no problem knowing the difference between fantasy and reality. I agree that college is the time when there is more pressure than ever on the kids. That is why I knew of so many people in college to commit suicide. It makes me sick to say this but maybe there are people out there that are beyond help. You can do all the studies you want and try to diagnose everything, but seriously if someone makes the decision to kill anyone (themself included), it is definitely something beyond TV and videogames.

What, close down the borders? Usually immigrants offer the best perspective on what things are like in the real world. We have our own spoiled, lazy, screwed up, think they are entitled to everything kids here. If it's easier for you to label foreigners as the enemy then go ahead and live in your world of denial.

No need to be sorry, I'm not attacking your opinion...just disagreeing. I can agree that we don't need to have any religious wars going on here like in many other places in the world, but I don't think classifying immigrants as troublemakers will help anything.

No but in the past 7 years they have been almost the main root of it here in America, no? Wether its here or in another country its still affecting our way of living, right?
So if we stop letting immigrants into the country is it permanent or temporary until things calm down? Will things ever calm down? Wouldn't we make a few enemies? Wouldn't we be going against the priciples that this country was founded upon? Could we really claim freedom and democracy? I guess it would only be if you were lucky enough to be born here. Are you a Native American? If not somebody in your family tree must have been an immigrant. Sorry I guess we just agree to disagree.
bobby the brain

Actually yes I am Native American my grandmother still lives on a reservation.
Regarding your other question no it probably won't calm down, because there are still those that will find a way in wether they float over here on a raft come thru tunel on the Mexican border or whatever little nifty ways they have to get past our blind as a bat easily bribed border control.
I'd be willing to bet for whatever the population is of those actual legal immigrants the population of illegal immigrants is double that or close to it.
Remember that eventhough our country was founded on all these wonderful things. It is no longer the same things that make this country the greatest country in the world and is slowly depleting, because of money hungry politicians looking for the easiest way to feed their rich freinds and keep them rich.

You were right in taking this situation seriously. In the anniversary of Columbine especially, I think sometimes kids get crazy ideas.
I do belive a predisposition to violence in video games and movies are factors when something horrible like this happens. I also think the media is to blame. Sometimes these spree killings or teenager gunmen are given a lot of media attention and it can cause kids to become more interested in behaivor like this.

I think our school systems need to take stuff like Cubs84 said more seriously there are usually warning signs. Last year there was a girl at my daughters school that gave 9 death threat notes to people they were numbered 1 thru 9. My daughter got the #1 note it went something like I know what you did last summer and you lied for that you will die. I hope you have a slow brutal death; see you in hell. And others notes were just as bad. They had a school assembly about it with an officer telling about what the punishment for these acts would be but the girl got no counseling or disciplinary actions. Parents were in outrage. The girl never went thru but it still worries me. I know the girl and she is capable of going over the edge. Her dad has been in and out of prison, in 8th grade she got a tatoo and shaved her head. Schools need to get involved in our kids lives as well as our good parenting.

This sort of supports my point that the parents make all the difference. Sure what the girl did sounds like something out of a movie, but look at her parent situation. I have been watching the 3 stooges ever since I could see, but you never saw me gouging someone's eyes or sticking someone's head in a vice. I know, stooges violence isn't as graphic as other stuff, but I did watch all that other stuff too. One problem with schools is that for many kids they are the only source of discipline. You can't give out swats or other punishment, the only thing you can do is suspend them from school. For the real problem kids that is nothing more than a vacation. For example, when I got in a fight and was suspended from school, my parents had a HUGE list of chores for me to do. They never had a cleaner house when my 3 days out of school were over. That was during the day, at night I was busy doing all my homework my parents went and picked up for me (even though it wasn't for credit, I still had to do it). Oh, and I also was held out of my IKWF and club football practices even though they were not affiliated with the school, so technically I could have gone. I guarantee the kid I fought spent 3 days sitting around smoking pot and whatever else all day. He was a 16 year old 8th grader who constantly changed schools because he was always getting expelled, so yeah definitely lacking parenting there. These kids skip school all the time so suspending them does nothing. If the school comes up with some other type of punishment, they will probably end up getting sued.

Very true. I don't know what the answer for the schools would be. I guess they kinda got their hands tied too.
On the news this a.m. it mentioned that 2 other of our massacres occured this same week. This 1 sounds like an upset love thing but I wonder if the plans are carried out on anniversaries of such events on purpose, or if it could be an astrology thing, not that I'm a big supporter of that but I wonder .

I was pretty bummed out at the time, especially since he picked the fight with me. I really didn't do much to avoid it though. I always knew if I got suspended I was in big trouble so I saw it coming. I guess if anything I thought it was unfair because I knew my punishment was worse than the other kid's was. Looking back I think it was fair, and it was definitely effective, I never risked getting suspended again. ;)

Funny how perspectives change as we get older. I once upon a time thought I had it sssooo rough; but my parents actually were way to leanient Took me a long time to realize that,
Now I wish they would've been stricter might've saved me some rough roads! They learned from their mistakes my sister had it way rougher, and as a parent I am tougher on my kids; but sometimes that seems to cause rebellion so that's why I was curious on your response. So thanks!
Parents cant do anything these days. All i know is a little *** whooping once in a while isnt a bad thing! That type of parenting is disappearing, and these kids do whatever they want, when they want.

I couldn't agree more ace, but the reason it is disappearing it is now considered child abuse. About the only thing that works here is no computer. We live out of town and no one drives yet; so grounding isn't even an option unless it was from sports, and I think sports help keep kids on the right track.

Oh man I see kids everyday that could really use one. I see it this way, the world is rough and if you don't have your head on straight it can really kick your ***, so why not help prepare them for the real world? :D
Ask a teenager what the word "consequence" means. How many of them actually know?

The genration may be screwed up and all, but this goes into the time we live in. Meaning the divorce rate dead bat dads and broken homes are much more prominent now a days and this affects all those involved. PLus the adancemnet of technology and the violence we have seen on TV, etc... Not saying its right or I approve but it is the way it is. Until the genration ahead of us lends a helping hand, instead of judging and pointing fingers for we are the product of that generations teahings and guidance!

Everyone RUN. ha, it is pathetic, and most of America falls into blaming other people. For instance they are trying to blame the school, and people will sue the school. But people seem not to blame the guy for going insane and shooting everyone. Realistically what could have the school have done? Drive around with a megaphone, "Um there is a serial killer running around campus killing people. Stay in your rooms." Yeah, that would have worked for sure.

I don't think the school could've done much There was a no-gun policy on campus so no one had anything to protect themselves. Criminals will always find a way to get arms; politicaians need to understand that instead of trying to take them away from all americans. We need something to defend ourselves. There are alot of loonies out on our streets!!!
On GMA this am they interviewed his room mates I found it odd he never had a conversation with them other than 1 word answers and never looked them in the eyes.

I am raising MY OWN kids and that is the helping hand that I lend to society. I believe that rasing responsible, socially aware children who have values is what I am suppose to be doing.
I have taken classes with younger college kids, taught for ten years and coached for ten years. How do you suggest I make "the generation" in question better? I can't help it that mommy and daddy gave them everything and didn't give them consequences when they needed them. It is not my fault that they grew up in an educational system that believed everyone should be "socially" promoted even though they may not have earned the right academically. A system in which everyone got an award! The "screwed" up generation already knows it all, thinks they will make $60,000 right out of college and owes nobody!
I have an awesome editorial from Bill Gates. If I can find it, I will post it!

Beware of Golden Age fallacies! Deadbeat dads have been around a long, long long time, yet nowadays the states are tired of supporting a good number of the kids through taxpayer TANF money and not getting it repaid. That, and the mdoern custodial parent is now aware that they do have rights and that they do not need to fork over cash to put the support payer in front of the judge. That much has changed, but not by a lot. Most custodials still think that the government or a private attorney are needed to get support.
Either way, I agree with you that homes break apart more easily, as there is a much looser social stigma toward keeping the family together than there used to be. But this is contestable in terms of where the trend is going. Through the 70's-90's, the broken family was surely on the upswing.
