I recently been contacted by Greg Pohl, the Assisant Coach from Marquette High School in Chesterfield Missouri and tournament director, to help him possibly 2 Illinois teams to compete in their tournament on January 5th, 2008 because they just found out that they are short 2 teams. From my understanding, they have put on a pretty competitive tournament with some of the weights have some of the state's best wrestlers for the past couple of years. Marquette is in the largest division (class four) in MO, as are most of the teams that compete in the tournament. They have schools from Kansas City attending, as well as Alton - IL, coming back again. I know it's a bit late, but perhaps there is a team or two somewhere throughout the state that still needs a above average tournament. They are great host, and as the tournament director, his only request is the team have full (almost full) line-up, and be competitive.
It would be easy to just have the 10 teams this year, but the teams have come to enjoy the format of our tournament, and he would like to continue that if possible. With 12 teams, they divide them into four pools of three teams. During the morning session, they wrestle duals within the pools. Afterwards, they take individual weight classes and determine the top wrestler/weight. They do the same for the middle, and bottom tier wrestlers. Then after the lunch break, they wrestle the top four wrestler's against each other in a round robin so that they all wrestle the best guys. They do the same for the middle and lower tiered guys. It's an exciting system and make each match very competitive. In the past, they have had the top four ranked wrestler's in one weight class all wrestle each other. No one gets missed! They would like to continue with this format, but need two appropriate teams..
