Both Northern Illinois University and the University of Illinois are in action this weekend but at two different open tournaments.
Coming off a solid performance at the Pointer Open last weekend where they earned 7 first place finishes, Northern Illinois will wrestle Saturday at the stacked Kaufman/Brand Open hosted by the University of Nebraska Omaha. There will be two divisions, an open division and one for 20 and under competitors. Head coach Dave Grant hinted in our Illinois Matmen Live interview that all of his true freshman would wrestle in the 20 and under division. This open is the nation's largest single-day collegiate meet with approximately 650 wrestlers from every level of collegiate wrestling. Teams that will be participating include:
NCAA Division I: Boise Sate, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Wyoming, North Dakota State, South Dakota State
NCAA Division II: Adams State, Augustana, Central Oklahoma, Chadron State, Colorado Mines, Minnesota State, Mankato, Minnesota State-Moorhead, UNO, Nebraska-Kearney, Northern State, St. Cloud State
NCAA Division III: Luther, Northwestern, Wartburg, Wisconsin-LaCrosse
NAIA: Briar Cliff, Buena Vista, Dana, Mary, Missouri Baptist, Waldorf
Junior College: Ellsworth, Iowa Central, Labette, Lincoln, Neosho and Ridgewater
The University of Illinois will be wrestling its first competition of the season Sunday at the Missouri Open. The tournament will feature nearly 600 wrestlers from 20 different collegiate programs, some of which include:
#2 Oklahoma
#4 Illinois
#11 Indiana
#14 Missouri
#20 Edinboro
There is some speculation as to whether Alex Tirapelle (157-pound senior) and Pete Friedl (184-pound senior) will compete Sunday since they will be wrestling in the 40th annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Oklahoma on Monday night. No. 2 Tirapelle will face No. 1 Joe Johnston (Iowa), and No. 3 Friedl will square off against No. 2 Paul Bradley (Iowa). According to our interview with head coach Mark Johnson, Kyle Ott (125-pound senior) will be held out of competition the first half of the season.
Northwestern's next match will be against Northern Illinois on December 1st in Dekalb.
Good luck to both programs this weekend.
