Burbank - Opening their 2005/2006 IHSA wrestling season, the Stagg Chargers traveled to Reavis to face the Rams.
The meet started at 160 with Mo Mahli of the Rams picking up an 11-5 decision over John Heinzman. At 171, Reavis’ Danny Urquizo scored a fall late in the 3rd period over Brian Specht. Stagg forfeited 189. Ram Francisco Vargas at 215 pinned the Charger’s Bob Coleman in the first period. After another Charger forfeit at 275, Reavis held a 27-0 lead.
Reavis forfeited 103 and 112, giving Stagg their first team points, and the score was 27-12, in favor of Reavis. With just 9 seconds left in the match, Scott Malarick at 119 pinned Max Oldenburg, giving the Chargers 6 more points. In one of the closest matches of the night, 125 pounder Wahab Alshahen of the Chargers beat Damien Fedderick of the Rams 6-4, closing the team score to 27-21.
Tom Anderson of Reavis outwrestled Steven Konzen 7-3 in the 130 match. At 135, Tim Klahn of the Chargers dominated Ray Ibrahim of Reavis with a 15-1 major decision, bringing Stagg to within 5 points, 30-25. Kevin Goien from Stagg pinned Chaz Peters at 140, in the first period, giving Stagg its first lead of the night, 31-30. At 145, Charger Nadir Salameh scored a first period fall over Shane Kennelly, putting the meet out of Reavis’ reach. In the final match of the night, 152 pound Stagg wrester Aba Mutayoba outlasted Dave Sims for an 9-8 decision in the closest match of the night, giving Stagg a 40-30 dual meet victory.
