Dundee-Crown Dvorak Memorial Wrestling Tournament
Tournament Preview by Andre' Morgan
http://illinoismatmen.com/images/albertwhite.jpgThe wrestling mid terms are coming and the test will be administered at the Al Dvorak Memorial Wrestling Tournament December 22-23 at Dundee-Crown. The Dvorak has always featured the best in Illinois wrestling seeking to gauge where they stand in the middle of the season. This year will be no different with thirteen of the top twenty five teams in Illinois and four that are nationally ranked by WrestlingUSA Magazine in the hunt for top honors.
State champ Sandburg (ranked No. 3 in the country) returns to defend its Dvorak title against (No. 11 in U.S.) Montini Catholic and (No. 31 in U.S.) St. Rita. With the addition this year of (No. 21 in U.S.) Mount Carmel, and California power Vista to an already crowded top rated field, the action should provide fans a great preview of the IHSA state tournament.
Top local teams ranked by Illinois Best Weekly, expected to deepen the completion in the 32 team tournament include No. 2 Providence, No. 4 Nequea Valley, No. 7 Marist, No. 9 Wheaton North, No. 12 Libertyville, No. 14 Lyons, No. 18 Plainfield Central, No. 21 Dundee-Crown and No. 22 Harlem. Downstate powers Mahomet-Seymore, Dixon, and Moline will also make the trek up north to test themselves against the best in the state.
The tournament which originated in the seventies at Rockford Boyland, moved to Glenbard East in the nineties and has been at Dundee-Crown the last three years will be on the move again next year. A possible referendum vote in March to eliminate sports has forced Dundee-Crown coach and tournament director Al Zinke to move the 2006 meet to Harlem. "This tournament allows our area (northern suburbs) of the state to show off the quality facilities and wrestling that we have." said Zinke. That will not change with the move to Harlem."
The Dvorak more than any other tournament during the regular season, goes a long way towards impacting who wins state titles. Capturing a title will stamp that wrestler as a top state title contender. The top wrestlers in Illinois will be at the Dvorak and several weight classes offer the best individuals in the state. "When you have top teams you naturally get top individuals as well." Sandburg coach Mike Polz said. "Adding a quality program like Mount Carmel to the field only will increase the competition".
The deepest weight classes this year are 125, 135, 189, 215 and 275. The top two rated wrestlers in the state at 103 B. J. Futrell, Chris Spangler, 119 John Starzyk, Zack Taylor, 125 Kyle Hutter, Mario Morgan, 135 Brian Martin, Steve Zimmerman are expected to meet in a preview of possible state title matches. Others to watch include 130 Brandon Precin, 145 Albert White, 160 Mike Benefiel, 171 Nate Holly, 215 Joe Fagiano and Christian Brantley.
