Wrestling is Back at Marquette University

08/02/2006 -
On November 18, 2002, an article called Death of a Dream: The Demise of Wrestling at Marquette University was sent to the presses. Marquette University had controversially and swiftly dropped its Division 1 wrestling program. Wrestling was considered a done deal, and many of those, including the wrestlers themselves, who supported and loved the program were left confused and without hope of ever seeing it flourish again. This was not only a blow to the Marquette wrestling community but to Wisconsin college wrestling in general.
It was considered by many an impossible task, but thanks to uncompromising dedication and determination from wrestlers who attended Marquette University for its academic recognition (sacrificing wrestling in the process), wrestling is once again a competitive sport at Marquette, under Club status. It took half a year of constant effort to successfully revitalize the program, a time during which the wrestlers at the school were truly tested, as their program had no guarantee of approval. Regardless, the wrestlers were willing to practice and condition themselves in hopes of a chance to step onto the mat against collegiate competition. On February 26, 2006, their hopes were granted.
Heading into their first official season in 2006-2007, the Golden Eagles hope to be top contenders in the NCWA North Central Conference. A new, promising coaching staff has taken the throne, including Head Coach Dan Loberg, a 1996 graduate of Truman State, Coach James Jaramillo, a 2004 graduate of Marquette University, and Coach Bob Christenson, who has mentored area wrestlers for many years. Many Marquette individuals already have their sights on the National tournament in 2007. The upcoming team looks to be young, but talented. A few wrestlers heading the lineup include senior Adam Crozier (165), who placed at multiple open tournaments in 2005-2006, junior Nathan Gilling (141), a two-time Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Champion from D.C. Everest, sophomore Andy Simmons (157), who found success at several open tournaments in 2005-2006 after placing 5th at WIAA Individual State his senior year, and sophomore Brett Coffelt (125/133), who held a record of 7-7 as a freshman, with a 4-1 record at 125. Many other talents will also be gracing the lineup, creating the potential for a very exciting – and rewarding – debut season.
The Marquette University Golden Eagles are looking to schedule as many competitions as possible before the North Central Conference tournament in 2007. If any teams are looking to book a dual or have room to add another team to a tournament or multi-dual competition, please contact Marquette Wrestling (contact information can be found on their Contact Info page on the www.ncwa.net).
