I heard Granite won 63-6. Belleville East got wins from Reid, who beat Walliser (6-3) at 152, and Rhein. Also, Barnett got dec over Billingsley.

Granite City grinds down Belleville East

Warriors score 63-6 win over Lancers

BY DEAN CRIDDLE

News-Democrat

BELLEVILLE - It was another routine night on the wrestling mats for the Granite City Warriors on Thursday at Belleville East High School.

Sophomore Jacob Wilson (103 pounds) and freshman Zach Gregerson (112) were among seven Warrior grapplers who scored pins as Granite City routed the Lancers 63-6 in a Southwestern Conference match.

Getting early pins from Tyler Carney (140) and Blake Reed (145), the Warriors (19-3) jumped out to a quick 15-0 lead after three matches.

Twice-beaten Kyle Reid got the Lancers on the scoreboard with a 6-3 win over Gary Walliser at 152, but the Warriors scored 18 points in the next three bouts to take a 33-3 lead just halfway through the meet.

"I thought we looked sharp tonight. This was the first time all year we've had our entire lineup together and I thought the kids went out and did a good job," Warriors coach Allen Kirgan said. "But this isn't the time you want to peak. We've still got some work to do, and we can still get better. I'm hoping we'll be at our best by the time the regional, sectional and state come along. That's when it counts."

While Granite City continues to improve, the Lancers have regressed. Full of hope after a 5-0 start, East has now lost six in a row to fall below the .500 mark for the first time this year.

But even healthy and at their best, the Lancers probably wouldn't have been able to beat the Warriors, who have been a wrestling power for decades.

"Tradition -- that's what its about. Granite City has a tremendous tradition of turning out winning wrestling teams, and coach (Allen) Kirgan and his staff do a great job of working with their kids to get the most out of them," East coach Maurice Brown said. "We knew we had out work cut out for us tonight and the kids gave a good effort. They (Granite City) were just too strong."

After Reid cut the Warriors lead to 15-3 at 152, Ed Lance (160), Gerad Baldwin (171) and Scott Penny (189) all scored six-point wins.

Ricky Barnett increased the Warriors lead to 36-3 with a decision over DeAndre Billinsgsley before heavyweight Joe Rhein picked up the Lancers second win at 275.

Wilson and Gregerson both posted pins at 103 and 112 for the Warriors.
