A junior, he has already defeated four nationally ranked wrestlers at heavyweight. In what many prognosticators say has been Montini's toughest schedule in the team's history, Goebel has earned the championship in Ohio's Ironman Invitational, Illinois' Dvorak Invitational, was undefeated at Minnesota's "The Clash" Dual Team tournament, and for the second consecutive year he pinned all his opponents—a tournament record—en route to the championship at Wisconsin's Cheesehead Invitational. Goebel's only loss this season was to Illinois's other nationally ranked heavyweight, Christian Brantley from Mt. Carmel High School. Days later, he avenged this defeat by beating Brantley in an exciting triple overtime battle.

As a freshman in 2004-05, Goebel placed fourth at the 215 pounds weight class in Class A. Last season, not only was Montini moved to Class AA, but Goebel worked hard to regain the strength he had lost after shedding a significant amount of weight during football season, finally making 215 (pounds) come early November. His fifth place finish at the state tournament was disappointing to him, yet this was the impetus for the rigorous training regiment that has left him focused on one unfulfilled goal—to be standing at the highest platform as the state’s heavyweight champion. However, in the competitive sport of high school wrestling, anything can happen between now and February 16.
