Junior Greco Team advances 3 to finals

When you enter 74 wrestlers in a tournament, as Illinois did in the Junior Greco-Roman Nationals at Fargo, you have to like your chances.

Just three of our nine semifinalists – Kegan Calkins (126), SirRomero Howard (145) and Adarios Jones (285) – made it through to the finals, but with 16 All-Americans, Illinois will make it a clean team sweep in Greco.

Going into the place matches, Illinois leads Minnesota, 62-45. Minnesota has 11 All-Americans. No other state has more than seven.

Georgia, Minnesota and Utah also have three finalists.

Illinois has three All-Americans at two weight classes – 106 and 145 – and two All-Americans at 100 and 285.

We’ll pay tribute to the All-Americans in the next installment. But some of the non-placers racked up lots of victories. It’s wrestlers such as those who are the foundation of any strong team.

Non-placers with 5 contested wins:

DeVante Williams, 113

Nelson Baker, 120

Luke Fortuna, 152

Austin Chaon, 182

Non-placers with 4 contested wins:

Jake Davis, 138

Riley Beard, 145

Sadarriss Patterson, 170

Sean Ward, 195

A total of 12 other wrestlers had three contested wins. Great job, everyone!

Kegan Calkins, our first finalist, lost 7-2 to Taylor LaMont of Utah. He took a 2-0 lead with a first-period takedown, but LaMont countered with a snap and spin to tie it, then hit a five-point reverse lift to finish the scoring. The second period was scoreless.

LaMont, a sophomore, is still a Cadet. As a member of the LDS church, he doesn't compete on Sunday, which is the day the Cadet Greco started. That's why he also wrestled in the Junior Greco last year (and placed). He'll be wrestling in the Cadet freestyle.

Sir Romeo Howard lost, 16-5 to Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer of New York at 145. He led 2-0 after a pair of pushouts before giving up a 10-point flurry that included a takedown and four gut wrenches. He got it within 10-5 at the break, but Rodriguez-Spencer hit a high dive for a takedown to make it 12-5, then caught Howrd pushing in with a throw on the edge to end it.

Rodriguez-Spencer, who is signed with Iowa State, was an unbeaten state champion as a junior and won his first 38 matches this season, but injuries forced him to miss the state series.

Adarios Jones lost 2-0 to Sam Stoll of Minnesota. He was put down in the first period and Stoll followed with the only points of the match on a gut wrench.

Jones had Stoll put down with 1:13 left in the match, but couldn't turn him.

Rob,
Typically he and brother Grant do not wrestle on Sunday as you stated but in very rare instances they will compete on Sunday as both competed at Cadet Pan American Championships involving a Sunday competition. The LaMonts are an outstanding family by any measure. Dad is head of about 11 business ventures and there has never been a television in the LaMont house. An extremely close knit family
