  • U of I line-up for Las Vegas

Just curious if Gabe Flores, Joe Kotowski, and Troy Tirapelle are healthy enough to wrestle at Las Vegas this Friday and Saturday? (And why is the tournament on Friday and Saturday instead of Sat & Sun?).

Will the Las Vegas line-up look like this? I've included today's (11/27/07) Wrestling Report ranking.

    125 Flores #9
    133 Kennedy #5
    141 Tirapelle #21
    149 Zeman or Kotowski?
    157 Poeta #2
    165 Smith-Bergsrud #14
    174 Dergo #12
    184 Brownson or Gleissner?
    197 Bond #11
    Hwt Wise #19

How many of the other guys will go to UNI Open on Sunday?

    Any information is appreciated.

I would look for Kotowski or (insert name here) to go instead of Zeman just based on the the fact he's a little banged up. He could be a quick healer though. You should look for the rest of the team (those healthy) to be at UNI.

      Vegas

Nice question conquistador. It is my guess that the Friday-Saturday setup is due to the fact that if it was Saturday-Sunday all the "wrestling people" would be tapped out at the tables and not have any entry fee to get in on Sunday. Being the majority of teams in the Big 10 are in the midwest, where you can usually find a nice buffet or Tiny Tap to fill your gullet at a reasonable price. Flamingo, Stardust, and the "OLD" MGM are upstairs with Sammy, Dean, Bugsey Siegel, Joey Gallo and I just heard the great Robert Goulet! These days you need coin in Vegas. Though I do understand the method behind the madness of Friday-Saturday I will most likely be tapped out by late Friday and looking at a Mega Casino that used to be Bugsey's house after I pay my remaining $10 to the see the homes of the mafia tour. Hopefully I have been some help.

PS Two thirds of your wrestlers will be in Vegas!

Mr. Pint keg will you please pace yourself. You sound like a wiley old timer or just a history buff. Albeit the Rat Pack is the best of all times, Robert Goulet was over rated. As to the "Madness" there is none. Unless you get slipped a Mickey in your drink. Then you end up at the tables all tapped out. If the WestWard Ho was still alive you would have ended up there. The Ho has since been imploded. I've been to vegas too many times. If you would like some help find my previous post (months) ago and you can attend my post wrestling party. Of course free if your drinking colt 45. Also, I'll be signing autographs at a place mentioned in previous posts long ago. I would say good luck to all but it's not about luck when talking about vegas. Just hang out with The Cheechoo and you'll be fine this weekend. You just have to find me.

Oh yeah, the LOCK will be serving breakfast at the Ihop in vegas too. So if your not into the wrestling, you might want a breakfast and good humor with the LOCK.

Peace and I look forward to seeing all the wrestling fans at my post party saturday night.

I think Gleissner is pretty much locked in at the 184 spot. He performed pretty well at the Mizzou Open. Brownson, on the other hand, was 0-2 pinned twice.

At 149, right now i'd give the nod to Zeman. Kotowski didn't compete at Mizzou due to injury I think. Zeman has the edge in experience; remember he filled in for T.Tirapelle for a couple meets last season. He got a nasty cut above his eye at Mizzou, but that was in an early match and he kept wrestling the rest of the day even with stitches. The last week and a half should have given him plenty of time to heal.

Give em hell in Vegas boys.

I was unsure about Zeman as he was banged up pretty good in Mizzou.
His eye was barely open when I saw him! good to hear he'll be in
Vegas at the roulette wheel with me.

From U of I web page:

              Las Vegas Invite Probable Lineup
              125:
              Gabe Flores (Sr., 0-0)
              133: Jimmy Kennedy (So., 3-0)
              141: Troy Tirapelle (Jr., 3-0)
              149: Grant Paswall (Fr., 5-0)
              157: Mike Poeta (Jr., 4-0)
              165: Clint Arlis (So., 2-1)
              174: John Dergo (So., 5-0)
              184: David Gleissner (Sr., 7-2)
              197: Patrick Bond (So., 3-1)
              HWT: John Wise (Jr., 5-2)

149 is interesting. Maybe Mr. Paswall will turn out to be a diamond in the rough. I've looked back through U of I releases, and as far as I can tell his signing was never announced. That would have led me to believe that he was a walk-on, but Wrestling Report info indicated that he was recruited by Illinois. Best of luck to all these guys!

Wow, I just notice that Clint Arlis is to start at 165. I take it Roger S-B is banged up. Anyone know what's up with Roger?

I tried to let you people know about Grant after the Missouri open. I guess no one listened...I don't blame ya too much as I tend to ramble. Learn to read what I write a little better. I know it is hard to do late night however.. I tend to burn the wick at both ends and my mind works faster than my typing at that point... I apologize to those of you that can't keep up with it..

Anyway, Grant went to Blair Academy (Some of you will know this school.) Due to some political issues he chose to leave. For those of you that have an idea of Blair Academy, you don't simply go and wrestle there cause you are an average wrestler. He is a tough customer. He really should be red shirting, but due to the injuries etc, I firmly think he will fill in nicely for the Cheif.. We will see though...

My initial thought was they might (if others were all healthy) send him to Northern and then check things out more fully at Midlands. However, wrestling Grant this year is not a bad thing. He is a big (taller) 149 lber and will likely be a 157/165. It appears we have a couple decent guys a 57/65 through next year, so Grant can redshirt next year then be ready for 57/65 and help the team out just as well as if he shirted this year. Moreover, as many-many have stated 149 is going to be a meat grider again this year and it wouldn't hurt to have a couple/three guys at that weight to endure the season. Not sure why Roger isn't listed, I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Hope it's warm in Vegas, I'm tired of the cold already.

Stop whining. Although I try to read your posts only if I haven't eaten for a while, I did notice your comment about Paswall. So I went and re-looked up the Frosh/Soph results from the MO Open (I hadn't originally noticed it was an Illini that had won 149 lbs), then I looked up Paswall's bio on the U of I page, got curious and posted a Call for Info post on Wrestling Report, and got some info from the knowledgeable eastern posters on that site. All that because you pointed out Paswall's fine performace at Mizzou. Merci.

Grant did wrestle tough at Missouri. I didn't mention him earlier because I wasn't sure if he was going to redshirt or not this year. You're right though Cindy, he will fit in nicely for me at that spot. He's being thrown in a lion cage in Vegas though this weekend.

Oh and one more thing C-H-I-E-F. Learn it, live it

sorry about the mis type....I do it alot! Anyway, yeah, Grant is tough and you are VERY right about the "Lions Cage" I prefer "Den" Oh well... You say potato etc etc. He will have his work cut out this weekend at that weight,, but will end up being the best solution at that weight for this year for the CHIEF!! .

No whining here and no worries mate.. All is good in my world and I hope you had as wonderful a Holiday as myself. If you are being bitter because of the Holiday's or something, simply work it off. Don't bring misery to my neighborhood.. Drop the fork and run a mile or so. I alway's enjoy your knowledge but please do not banter with Thindy on something we are both fond of (Illinois Wrestling in general..) Take a lap or so, and understand I will not whine about posts. I am good with it.. Anyway, Yes, Grant will be in the line up and should gain some good experience this year..
With that, Cranky one.....Sorry, Conqy one, we gonna see you in Vegas?
Thindy and Oliver fly out tomorrow morning . Just in time to place a bet on the Cowboy's beating the Packers... (Should in fact make money on it With the "Boys" only giving 7...) Right after we collect, gonna jog a mile or so to grab the seeds at The Hilton..

Ok, pick the fork back up and stuff yourself with the leftover Turkey! Happy Holiday's!!
