  • Senior Greco and Women's Nationals

Illinois wrestlers continue to make an impact on the Senior National stage. The Greco and Woman's Senior Nationals were moved up to December because of the Olympic Trials scheduled for April, when the nationals are usually held. They were held for the first time in Arlington, TX. The unseasonably cold weather made this midwesterner feel right at home.

The top seven placers qualified for the Olympic Trials. Among the qualifiers were:

    Men's Greco

55kg Max Nowry (the former Wheeling standout beating Nikko Triggas for 3rd place)

60kg Joe Betterman (the Lake View Chicago native reclaiming his place at the top of the heap)

66kg Josh Castellano (from Fenton, beat World Champ and UFC star, Joe Warren, en route to a 4th place finish)

74kg Tanner Andrews (from West Aurora, placedg 5th)

84kg Mark Stenberg (the Lockport grad beat 2010 World Team Member, Cheney Haight on his way to placing 5th)

120kg Peter Kowalczuk (the Oak Park product placed 3rd)

    Women's Freestyle

48kg Erin Golsten (the Martinez Elite standout and placed 7th)

55kg Haley Augello (Another Lockport product, placed 7th)

63kg Alli Ragan (the Carbondale native, place 4th)

63kg Veronica Carslon (from Addison Trail, placed 5th)

    Other Illinois competitors were:

66kg Chad Vandiver (from Harlem, wrestling up from his usual 60kg)

66kg John Bozarth (from Normal, wrestling in his first Senior Open)

66kg Dillan Cowan (also wrestling in his first Senior Open)

74kg Jonathan Drendel (West Aurora, coming back from shoulder surgery and not quite ready)

74kg Ryan Hope (the Glenbard North grad, still going strong)

74 kg Corey Hope (Ryan's brother)

84kg Charles Lewis (a Thornton grad, also coming back from shoulder issues)

It is great to see so many Illinois natives still competing and doing well at the highest levels.

If I missed anyone, please add them to the list.
