  • Most Improved Wrestlers

We all know about Cortez, Brill, White, Robertson...
However, what about the upper-classmen that did not qualify for State previously that are having a great "breakout" year? Maybe just sheer hard work has gotten them to a higher level. Here are a few that come to mind for me:

113: Calkins (Wheaton North)- took 3rd in Regional last year.
126: Radcliffe (Lockport)- took 4th in Regional last year.
132: Vela (St. Charles)- took 4th in Regional last year.
138: O'Mara (OPRF)- took 3rd in Regional last year.
152: Higgins (Belleville West)- Not Top 5 in Sectional last year.
160: Brucki (Carl Sandburg)- Lost to Andreotti in Regional 13-3. No Top 5 in Sectional last year.
170: Downs (Quincy)- Never even heard of him last year.
195: Montoya (Lockport)- took 3rd in Regional last year.

These are all guys who deserve recognition. I'm not saying they will state but have greatly improved. I'm sure you have some to add.

I am confused, I don't think Vela wrestled in the regional last year. The rumors around the forum at that time were that he was suspended from the team due to some disciplinary problems. I don't know if that is true of course, but I do remember it being talked about this time last year.

          170: Tim Young Aurora West.

Didn't even make it to the constellation match at regionals last year (Marion wasn't even there). He won regionals this year. Also, early on in the year gave Holler a match. (7-3)

              Most improved!!!

The most improved I can think of is Hecox. Last year if I remember right he had some varsity matches. He was not a starter for regionals. 50/50

Now in his Soph year he is ranked 4th and beat #3 Howell,#8 Barbian, #9 Benson, Ambrose ...
