IHSA Blunder

It hasnt been really discussed by the IHSA almost made a huge blunder this past weekend. Their scoring system was incorrectly set up in trackwrestling. Luckily someone caught it, but that could of been a disaster.

How does something like this happen to begin with? Track basically lets you score the tournament in any fashion that you choose, and some how they screwed it up!

Sounds like it was not really an IHSA "blunder" but a hiccup in the way track scores certain brackets. I think they just scored the 2 brackets in question manually and figured out the team score.

IHSA needs to decide on how to score

The problem is when you have 8 or less they score it like an 8 man bracket. However, if you have a full 9 man bracket, it should be scored as a 16 man bracket. Giving those first matches bye in the round of 1/16

So if you have a full bracket and pin your way through you can earn 28 points for your team. If you have 8 athletes or less and pin your way through the most points you can earn is 24 points for your team.

The IHSA needs to decide on how they are going to score it. Either do a 16 man or 8 man but don't mix it for different weights depending on the number of athletes. It gets to confusing

Per IHSA by-law any bracket over 8 needs to be scored as a 16 man bracket. So the brackets where there was a rat tail match, all the other bouts should of been recorded as byes, where the first match becomes a double bonus situation for that first round winner. The IHSA had track set it up incorrectly.

Got it. Looks like it was a setup error on the part of the tournament director (or whoever built the brackets).

Looks like it's still showing as a 10 man bracket in Trackwrestling which does not score the additional advancement and activity points.

I'm guessing the official results are logged somewhere else?

When I go to the IHSA website it directs me to Trackwrestling for the official results.

The Deerfield one came to light only because the regional was so close. I'll chalk some of it up to the fact that many if not most of the hosts have little to no experience running or setting up brackets in Trackwrestling but it's something that needs to be addressed going forward.

Question from a newbie. Why don't mores schools use track wrestling to report scores? It is frustrating to go Colombo to find scores from dual matches.

I like the use of Trackwrestling to see the live progress of the tournaments and brackets, but I liked the way the IHSA used to post final results on the webpage. It made it much easier and less clicks to find team scores and qualifiers.

I agree. Trackwrestling needs to have a tab where you can just click final brackets, where it is just all listed on one link (similar to pdf documents of brackets listed on one link), instead of the million clicks it takes to navigate for one tournament.

I know Wisconsin mandates it for all meets and tournaments that take place in the Badger state. Iowa may as well.

We are lucky here in the Quad Cities. The coaches are very good about calling in the boxes to the Argus-Dispatch and Dan Makarewicz always seems to have a write up of a couple of meets and at least 1 wrestling feature story a week.

To the Trackwrestling experts out there: If you use 16 Man Place 4 for every bracket, regardless of the number of wrestlers, would the scoring have been calculated correctly?

I tried to make my case to a few coaches at our regional last weekend and all of them said it will never happen in Illinois. That coaches would find a way not to do it or to do it incorrectly on purpose. I remember when I started with Matmen, no one thought we could get all of the tournament results each week but we have done that. Someday I hope we can say the same for dual results.

Then the two need to talk and get it straight. If they don't figure it out, some year it will cost a team a regional title. Rock Island last year had a similar issue and it very nearly resulted in Plainfield South getting the title instead of Moline.
